Synopsis: Goodreads

Her life for freedom. Her blood for love. Her soul for vengeance.
Ripped from a forgotten homeland as a child, Tisaanah learned how to survive with nothing but a sharp wit and a touch of magic. But the night she tries to buy her freedom, she barely escapes with her life.
Desperate to save the best friend she left behind, Tisaanah journeys to the Orders, the most powerful organization of magic Wielders in the world. But to join their ranks, she must complete an apprenticeship with Maxantarius Farlione, a handsome and reclusive fire wielder who despises the Orders.
The Orders’ intentions are cryptic, and Tisaanah must prove herself under the threat of looming war. Even more dangerous are her growing feelings for Maxantarius. The bloody past he wants to forget may be the key to her future… or the downfall of them both.
But Tisaanah will stop at nothing to save those she abandoned. Even if it means gambling in the Orders’ deadly games. Even if it means sacrificing her heart.
Even if it means wielding death itself.

Review:

I’d give this more stars if Goodreads and WordPress would let me, but since it won’t, it gets top marks and all the praise. Truly loved the writing, the world, the characters (main, side, and evil) and the ending just leaves you wanting MORE. Thank God I’m coming to this so late! Else I don’t know how I’d survive waiting for the sequel – hell, I’ve only got to wait for the sequel to be delivered and that’s bad enough (someone tell me to buy the whole series next time I’m buying books please!).

Tissanah is a wonderful FMC, she’s not perfect but damn is she awesome. I found it tricky at first reading Tisaanah and Max’s interactions with each other but the author did a really good job at making us understand that Tisaanah didn’t know the language fluently that she was using to communicate, all whilst writing in English so we could understand it. It was very well done.

Max was a loveable MMC, there wasn’t a moment I didn’t like him – even when we learned about his tragic past. He and Tisaanah go on a character development arc together, learning to communicat with each other, tolerate each other, and eventually work together. It was a beautiful blossoming friendship and the eventual relationship is so believable because of it.

The story of Tisaanah and her journey to freeing her friends was amazing. I was with her the whole way, now don’t get me wrong there were certainly times I wanted to scream just give up on that and be with Max dammit, but I held strong (just as she did) and we’re being rewarded for it! Without revealing actual spoilers I can’t really mention why we’re being rewarded, but just trust me we are.

But my heart damn near broke for these two!! Carissa threw some damn hard scenes at us, that we had to just ENDURE! Monster. Utter monster. But I absolutely am I huge fan of this writing and world building. I’m obviously going to read the rest of this series and Carissa’s other series – Crowns of Nyaxia – because I think she just jumped into top 5 favourite authors… so lets hope the rest deliver too!

Edited to add: This book plays with the ‘ends justify the means’ vs ‘all lives matter’ and the organisation that follows all orders without question has me questioning their status as the ‘good guys’ (spoiler: They aren’t). They absolutely cannot be trusted and I absolutely do not like them. Except maybe… like two people.

Bring on book 2! Children of the Fallen Gods! Let’s go!

“It’s easy to die for someone,” I said, “but it is so much more valuable to live. I do not give you permission to fail if I fail. Do you understand me?” – Tisaanah
