In the small mountain town of Jasper, North Carolina, June Farrow is waiting for fate to find her. The Farrow women are known for their thriving flower farm – and the mysterious curse that has haunted them for generations.
The madness that led to Susanna Farrow’s disappearance left her daughter, June, to be raised by her grandmother. Everyone in Jasper is certain it’s only a matter of time before she finds the same end, but June has kept secret that her unravelling has already begun.
After her grandmother’s death, June follows a series of clues that link her mother’s disappearance to the town’s dark history, leading finally to a mysterious door.
Behind it may lay the answer to the mysteries that have always lingered like a dark shadow. Upon crossing the threshold, June embarks on a journey that will not only change both the past and the future, but entangle her fate and her heart in a star-crossed love.
Review:
The Unmaking of June Farrow was an unexpected JOY! I have mentioned it in a few places but I did not pick this book for myself, nor was it recommended. I joined Cody & James’ book club on fable – they’re a TikTok BookTok couple that I follow on TikTok – and this was their November Book of the Month. I debated not picking it up as the cover left a lot to be desired – I just wasn’t all that interested.
I am so glad that I randomly decided to give it a shot – I didn’t even read the summary before I purchased and began reading. Chapter one was slow, if you’re someone who typically decides in the first chapter whether they’re going to carry on reading, then you would have been disappointed. But from chapter two onwards I was hooked! I was so hooked in fact that my work colleagues let me stay technically on lunch for an additional 15 minutes just to finish this book! It was so good I was very open about the fact that I was not going to be able to put it down.
I absolutely love June! This character was so well written, and her desire to figure out what the hell had happened to her mother and subsequently herself was a mystery I was totally on board with! I really do not want to say too much as I truly think this is a book you just have to take a chance on and read, but lets just say once the plot started plotting, all bets were off and I was hooked.
There was a bit of a debate in the book club chat about which side of the fence people were falling on, both romatically and life wise (this makes more sense if you read the book) but in my opinion there was only ever one option and I was smitten from the moment we met them. June’s family, both chosen and created, were brilliant characters also. They had me rooting for them and hoping that June would ultimately follow my heart in the end.
Gosh, I wish I could explain more but just know that this book will have you feeling a lot of feels as you go on the ride trying to solve the multiple mysteries presented to you. There is a bit of time travel involved and honestly I don’t feel like the author tied up all those plot holes as well as we’d hoped, and that’s the reason why I’m only giving The Unmaking of June Farrow a 4.5 star rating, but it was one of the biggest surprises for me this year! And I’m so pleased I took the chance and read it.
“You may have ruined my life, June. But first, you gave me one.”
