I’ve got a couple of books that I’m carrying over from December, however I am officially removing Fireborne from my TBR as I’ve been trying to read it for a few months now and I don’t have the desire to read it which is sad but as I’ve said before, I’m not about having a strict TBR that I can’t stray from!

December Left Overs

I started reading City of Ruin, Once Upon a Broken Heart and Kingdom of the Wicked in December and so I’m of course bringing them forward!

Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco
I started reading Kingdom of the Wicked when our Christmas guest was due to leave and quickly got into it, I just found myself so tired from the Christmas activities that I wasn’t able to read for as long as I normally was able to! I am loving the characters so far, Wrath and Envy are both exactly what I was looking for in terms of the idea of the seven deadly sins as Princes of Hell, so I’m totally on board!

City of Ruin by Charissa Weaks
City of Ruin is apparently the book where the opinions of this series spike up dramatically! This is the 6 star book from what I’ve seen! Just unfortunately so far nothing is happening and that has meant I’ve kind of been putting it down in favour of something else (Kingdom of the Wicked). But I’m hopeful that I’ll get to read finish this in January.

Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber
I actually decided to listen to Once Upon a Broken Heart on audible! Which probably means I’ll not finish it in January – because I have to really be in the mood to listen to a book. I’m tempted to read the physical book alongside listening to it as that might help me get through it in January… But so far I’m so intrigued by this story! And I’m a fan of the Prince of Hearts so of course I’m excited for more of him!

The Series Continues

Of course I’ve got multiple series’ still on going and so I’d like to continue with them… here we go:

Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros – (The Empyrean #3) – This comes out January 21st and no matter what I am reading at the time, I will be dropping it in order to read Onyx Storm!
Shadow & Storms by Helen Scheuerer – (The Legends of Thezmarr #4) – The final book in this series! I’ve got a lot of questions still and cannot wait to get answers! I’m also excited as the next series starts in 2025 (I believe it comes out at the end of January!)
Six Scorched Roses by Carissa Broadbent – (Crowns of Nyaxia #1.5) – Yes I know I said I was kind of done with short stories, but Six Scorched Roses is almost 200 pages so I have hopes that it could still be a good addition to the series! (Plus I’m going to end up having withdrawl from lack of Broadbent until The Fallen & the Kiss of Dusk releases later 2025!)
The Plea by Steve Cavanagh – (Eddie Flynn #2) – If I hadn’t had The Family Experiment and The Christmas Jigsaw Murders in December, I would have made it to The Plea so I’m a bit gutted I didn’t get to it but I know now not to have too many thrillers/ mystery’s on my TBR.

New Adventures

I love to keep my options open… and so I’ve got 6 new adventures I’d like to go on in January… we’ll see how many of them I get to!

To Bleed a Crystal Bloom by Sarah A. Parker – (Crystal Bloom #1) – This is a dark retelling of Rapunzal, a fairytale I’m only familiar with in a small way (unless Tangled counts) and so I’m super excited to get to read this one! Plus, it’s written by the author of When The Moon Hatched and I know she can write!!
Pestilence by Laura Thalassa – (The Four Horsemen #1) – I got this for myself for my birthday in 2024 and intended to pick it up rather quickly but instead fell in love with my kindle and so didn’t pick it up… That’s going to change in January! Partially down to a post Laura put on Instagram which was ‘convincing you to read my books using the most highlighted kindle quote’… and damn, this series got me.
Blood over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang – This is a stand alone, adult high fantasy dark academia for fans of Leigh Bardugo, V. E. Schwab, and Fullmetal Alchemist… now I may not have read anything by Leigh Bardugo and V.E Schwab but both are authors I’ve got books on my TBR for (general TBR, not January) but I love Fullmetal Alchemist and so it was an instant ‘say no more’… Let’s see how it goes!
Belladonna by Adalyn Grace (25 Challenge) – (Belladonna #1) – I was had at ‘alliance with death’… and of course a couple of TikToks doing the whole ‘convince you to read with just a quote’ thing… Belladonna I originally put off because of the cover I was seeing (the one with the girls face for most of the cover) and Quicksilver has taught me NOT to do that. So, Belladonna is on my January TBR!
Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas (25 Challenge) – (Throne of Glass #1) – I have actually read this… back when it first came out, I then reviewed Crown of Midnight and didn’t like it as much as Throne of Glass, and then started book 3 and just could not get into it… However, my fiancé loved this series and so he asked me to give it another chance… And so January is that time! Throne of Glass is getting its second chance!
The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson (25 Challenge) – (Mistborn #1) – There are a lot of books in the Cosmere and so it only makes sense to attempt to start it in January! However I do have a lot of books in January I’d like to get to, for various challenges and just because I want to read them, so we’ll see if I manage to make a start in January or if I push off the Cosmere until completing the SJM Second Chance challenge.

Book Club Read

The Book of Doors by Gareth Brown (25 Challenge)
Now I did not vote for this book for January’s pick, but given that I saw it was Kay’s favourite book of 2024, when it was chosen I wasn’t too uspet by it! I don’t know much about it, I don’t go into the book club picks having read too much more than a quick glance at the summary on Goodreads… but I’m excited none the less! The Book Club hasn’t failed me yet!

How realistic is the above?

I feel like as a whole, the TBR is less ambitious than December – which is necessary as I don’t have time off booked in January, except for a couple of days when a friend visits so he and my fiancé can go to a concert together… So, I’ll have a little bit of additional reading time, but otherwise it’ll just be evenings and weekends.

That being said, there isn’t a single book on my TBR that i’m not excited for; with the exception of perhaps Throne of Glass and that’s only because it’s a re-read and the pressure of having to love it as the rest of the internet does, makes me nervous to try it again. That being said, I also don’t think many of the books on my TBR are too long, so that might end up being quite the bonus!

As I’m embarking on a couple of challenges this year… the 12 books inspired by friends and BookTok/Tube/Stagram being one of them, and is already posted about on my blog… The others being: BINGO, Entering the Cosmere, and SJM’s Second Chance… This does mean that there are a lot of books as part of these challenges to read this year too… and you’ll notice that a few of these books have the (25 Challenge) signifier! It’s going to be tricky this year to balance the challenges side by side to the books I am already excited to read and have on my TBR.

We shall see! Look out for the posts about the other challenges I’ll be attempting this year! They’ll be up soon! So, in the mean time, let’s grab a book, blanket and a cup of tea because we’ve got a lot of reading to do!
