Synopsis: Goodreads

Ana da Silva always assumed she’d die young, she just never expected it to be at the hands of Famine, the haunting immortal who once spared her life so many years ago. But if the horseman remembers her at all, he must not care, for when she comes face to face with him for the second time in her life, she’s stabbed and left for dead.

Only, she doesn’t quite die.

If there’s one thing Famine is good at, it’s cruelty. And how these blighted bastards deserve it. Try as he might, he can’t forget what they once did to him. But when Ana, a ghost from his past, corners him and promises pain for what he so recently did to her, she and her empty threats captivate him, and he decides to keep her around.

In spite of themselves, Ana and Famine are drawn to each other. But at the end of the day, the two are enemies. Nothing changes that. Not one kind act, not two. And definitely not a few steamy nights. But enemies or reluctant lovers, if they don’t stop themselves soon, heaven will.

Review:

Famine is the third book in Laura Thalassa’s The Four Horsemen. Therefore there will possibly be spoilers for Books 1 and 2 (Pestilence and War) in the review below. Any spoilers for Famine will be hidden as normal. On with the review!

I’ll admit, this one hurts a bit. I loved how War ended and Famine’s introduction had me excited! But then I was kind of let down by the FMC in this one. Which is to say… most of the book let me down considering we spend most of the time in the FMC’s head.

Miriam was alright, but she felt hyper focussed on trying to get into Famine’s pants and it just rubbed me the wrong way I suppose. Perhaps I missed her point, or whatever… but I just didn’t gel with her. The bonus though? (minor spoiler if you consider revealing a trope that does not occur to be a spoiler)

NO PREGNANCY TROPE! WOOHOO!

I did like Famine’s character though – but I feel like discussing why I liked him more than I expected to will definitely go into spoiler territory as it revolves around a question he is asked at one point, and how he answers (honestly, I might add) that really solidified how I felt for him. What I can say is Famine’s powers were one of the coolest so far! We’ve had Pestilence who spread infection just by being in his proximity, War who could use the undead to ya know, fight… and now Famine whose power was also very thematic and made a lot of sense, but still I just simply really liked it.

I will say that Famine, however, did almost have me saying goodbye to it and the series. But I pushed through and finished the book and was gifted what I think could be the life jacket this series needed after this book. It alludes to one hell of a book 4! That means I ultimately decided I will finish out this series but I had expected to want to read it immediately… but I’m quite content to leave it for a few weeks and revist in April!

It doesn’t feel right to give a book in this series a 2.5 rating, but honestly I enjoyed it less than the books I’ve rated 3 stars, so it just didn’t seem right to give it 3 or higher.

“Because around you,” he says, “I feel the oddest urge to use my power to create rather than destroy.”

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.
