Review:
Heir of Fire is the third book in Sarah J. Maas’ Throne of Glass series. So there are likely going to be spoilers below for the books that come before, but spoilers for Heir of Fire will be hidden as normal.
Well well well, Heir of Fire… we meet again. Last we met, I don’t think I made more than 15% through you before I put you down. This time, I was determined to make it through the full thing. And I did it! Not only did I actually make it through Heir of Fire, but I actually enjoyed it more than I expected I would! So, let’s talk about it…
I did spend… gosh way too much of this book disliking and being mad at every character. I can’t be the only one, surely? And I knew that if I got to the end of Heir of Fire still disliking everyone then I could kiss goodbye to the rest of Throne of Glass. I’m pleased and heartbroken to say that was not the case and I was absolutely rooting for and loving multiple characters by the last 40%. I absolutely did not expect the twists that were thrown at us in Heir of Fire and it has meant that I actually had to tell myself not to pick up Queen of Shadows! Colour me shocked!
We have a new cast of characters in Heir of Fire and I can already tell you Rowan and Dorian are my boys in this series. I love them both. And I’m not convinced anything will change that now. Chaol and I are still on off terms, and I am so hopeful that will change but from other’s comments it doesn’t seem likely… I still miss Nehemia so much and so any time her name is mentioned my heart hurts, but I do have a feeling that after the events of Heir of Fire someone else is also going to be breaking my heart.
And even though I loved the second half, I was not able to rate the book 5 stars… so let’s discuss what I didn’t like. And unsurprisingly the things I didn’t like were things I didn’t like the first time round, but I have matured as a person and reader and it meant that those things didn’t end the book for me this time round! Let’s talk about them!
I remembered not liking Manon from last time, and not liking the POV switching. Well, the POV switching disliking is just something I don’t like if the POV’s aren’t broadcasted clearly. And annoyingly, this is an issue I’m having will all Sarah J. Maas books so it absolutely isn’t exclusive to Heir of Fire. But I did struggle with it the most in Heir of Fire because there are more POVs and more switches. It was just a harder read for it.
Onto Manon… I do not like Manon. I do not care for her chapters nor plot. I just don’t… I have been made aware, under good authority that I trust (Kay & Andy!) that Manon gets better. So, I will try to not be so instantly unhappy where her name pops up again. I will say, that although her chapters felt so disconnected from everything her later chapters did at least interest me in a way that the majority of hers didn’t. So progress? I suppose!
I am so so glad that Andy was reading Heir of Fire alongside me so that I could dicuss with him what was happening when it was happening because that added an element of fun to this for me. And also helped me to keep reading when I thought I was close to giving up just out of frustration (mostly because of the POV switching). So yes, I’m happy with the solid 4 star rating and I cannot wait for Queen of Shadows in April!
“So I am staying. Because you are needed, and because I will follow you to whatever end.”
