Synopsis: Goodreads

“Then, Samkiel, you will know this is how the world ends.”
But it was not this world. No, it was mine. It was Dianna. The world quakes in fear as the last shred of Dianna’s humanity is ripped from her. As it should. Grief consumes Dianna, burning away any semblance of good within her and threatening the budding relationship between her and Liam. Now, Liam must pull her back from the brink of complete damnation before time runs out.

Review:

The Throne of Broken Gods is the second book in the Gods & Monsters series, and so there are likely going to be spoilers below for The Book of Azrael. Any spoilers for The Throne of Broken Gods will be hidden as normal.

“We won’t abandon you, Dianna,” […] “We are not them.”

Holy moly. This damn series is shaping up to be one that RUINS ME! The cliffhangers alone rip my heart out. I hadn’t intended to read book 2 immediately after finishing book 1 but after Kaden brutally wrecked Dianna by snapping Gabby’s neck on television for everyone to see… I thought well if she’s suffering I should suffer along side her… and dove straight in.

This was a mistake. My heart could not handle everything that followed. In The Throne of Broken Gods we follow mostly Liam as he tries to figure out a way to do what he needs to do and save his Dianna from going totally dark as she’s on her revenge path that leads towards Kaden and most likely her own death. We do have a couple of POV’s in this book so it is not all Liam and Dianna, and I felt like all that were included were there for a good reason (and they’re clearly labelled, so no complaints here).

Minor spoiler about a trope in the book (not listed in the noted tropes)

It was so hard to read The Throne of Broken Gods because of the appearance – though not unexpected – of one of my least favourite tropes: separation. As Dianna is off on her revenge arc, naturally Liam is separated from her. I do struggle with this and I didn’t think I would as much given that we barely got a taste of Dianna and Liam together as a couple before everything went to shit, but it hit me harder than I expected. Thankfully it didn’t last the entire book – else I probably wouldn’t have lasted the entire book.

I may not have been here for Dianna’s revenge arc – as some courses of action she took I didn’t think were exactly necessary or fair (though this is definitely massive spoiler territory so we won’t discuss this, even hidden) – but I was here for Liam’s attempts at getting her back. Oh my gosh, this fucking God. I love him. And damn did my heart break for him multiple times!!

I decided I absolutely could not rush into book 3, becuase the fourth book comes out in October and I don’t think I can handle another cliff hanger for that long right now… Because I have no idea what the hell is going to happen following the crazy shit that was revealed at the end of Throne of Broken Gods… But I will be diving in as soon as I’m mentally stable enough to handle it! The 4.5 star rating feels right – though i’m unable to really explain in any detail why I knocked it down a .5 rating due to spoilers… Still, I’m very happy and cannot wait for the rest of the series.

“Love is such a dangerous and powerful emotion. The gods curse it, for it has power. Empires have fallen for it, reduced to sand and scriptures. Worlds have burned for it, and they will once more. Love has the power to touch even the untouchable. Use it.”

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
