Review:
“I was prepared to plead.” She gives me a look. “You would not.” “Oh, darling, I would do so much worse if only you asked.”
Fearless is Book 3 in The Powerless trilogy, and so there will likely be spoilers for books 1 and 2 (Powerless and Reckless) in the review. Spoilers for Fearless will be hidden as normal.
So, Fearless is the final book in the Powerless trilogy. This is a trilogy that reminded me heavily of a mix between Red Queen, The Hunger Games and The Selection. And at first I was kinda mad about it, but very quickly that didn’t matter because I fell in love with the characters. At least Kai and Pae. And unfortunately, that thing I loved got… well, ruined. Ish. Let’s talk about it.
At the end of Reckless, Kitt announces that the only solution he has come up with is to marry Pae. It’s that or kill her after she killed Kitt and Kai’s father. And I knew right off the bat that I was going to have trouble with Fearless. My review of Reckless started out with discussing how I hated the ending or Reckless. And that’s because I’m a Kai and Pae girly – I thought Kitt was cute in Powerless but by the time Reckless rolled around, I was totally sold on Kai and Pae. That means the idea of Kitt and Pae getting married just didn’t sit right with me…
That was the majority of Fearless… Kitt and Pae on the run up to their wedding with Pae and Kai being themselves as we have come to expect… And I hated that. By the time we got to end of Fearless I was still kind of confused over the whole wedding thing. And to discuss this in anymore detail would be a huge spoiler and so I won’t. But although Lauren Roberts does explain things, it kind of wasn’t enough for me and I was still left feeling icky and confused.
Whilst I say that the wedding preperation was the majority of the book, what I didn’t explain was what that preperation was. That’s because it shocked me. I went into Fearless blind, just knowing what I knew from Reckless (I didn’t even read Powerful – I regret this decision too!) and so when I started seeing reviews popping up about TRIALS again, I was so excited. Whilst the trials were not as good as Powerless, I enjoyed them. Well, the first was kind of… meh but the rest were excellent.
And that brings me onto why I couldn’t rate Fearless a 4 star. For as much as I enjoyed the trials… And my heart was torn apart and emotions ran high… I felt as though the ending just didn’t make any sense. As I have already said, Lauren Roberts gives a great explanation for everything… I still just was kind of left feeling meh about it. I did not enjoy Fearless as much as Powerless and Reckless. However, I was sobbing for a portion of it (and god knows how much worse that could have been if I had read Powerful first) and any book that can ruin me the way that collection of chapters did… Does not deserve a bad rating.
Overall, Fearless wasn’t perfect. It wasn’t the perfect ending. But the trails (minus the first) were brilliant, Kai and Pae were excellent together, and my damn emotions!! I was sobbing so damn much!! I do not regret reading it – I do regret reading it before Powerful. So if you haven’t yet picked up Powerful, please pick that up first. I’ll be diving into it for sure – but now that I’ve finished Fearless, I’m not going to be rushing to get to Powerful… I’ll get there one day though.
“My favorite color is a shade of her, a sliver of the vibrance she exudes. And I will gladly drown, gladly burn, gladly fall into those blue eyes until the day she looks at me for the last time.”
