THE MOST HATED WOMAN IN AMERICA

The Sandman killings have been solved. Daniel Miller murdered fourteen people before he vanished. His wife, Carrie, now faces trial as his accomplice. The FBI, the District Attorney, the media and everyone in America believe she knew and helped cover up her husband’s crimes.

THE LAWYER

Eddie Flynn won’t take a case unless his client is innocent. Now, he has to prove to a jury, and the entire world, that Carrie Miller was just another victim of the Sandman. She didn’t know her husband’s dark side and she had no part in the murders. But so far, Eddie and his team are the only ones who believe her.

THE FORMER FBI AGENT

Gabriel Lake used to be a federal agent, before someone tried to kill him. Now, he’s an investigator with a vendetta against the Sandman. He’s the only one who can catch him, because he believes that everything the FBI knows about serial killers is wrong.

THE KILLER

With his wife on trial, the Sandman is forced to come out of hiding to save her from a life sentence. He will kill to protect her and everyone involved in the case is a target.

Even Eddie Flynn…

Review:

The Accomplice is the 7th book in the Eddie Flynn series. They can be read as inter-connected standalones, but there is reference to previous cases and characters in each book, so I would recommend reading them in order. Spoilers for The Accomplice will be hidden if they’re included, but there may be spoilers for the previous books in the series.

Eddie Flynn along with his team, Kate, Bloch and Harry, are back… and this time the trial will put them all on the line because the murderer is still out there and he’s watching…

The Accomplice main event is the wife of a serial killer is being put on trial because the police and FBI can’t catch The Sandman. They know who he is! But he is many steps ahead of them and is in hiding. So they go for the next best thing, his wife and put her on trial for being the accomplice to the killer. Because you know, the wives of serial killers have to have known that their husbands were doing these awful things – there is no way they didn’t know – right?

That’s why Eddie and his team are set out to prove when they’re approached by Carrie’s lawyer and are asked to take over the trial. With a push from his team, Eddie agrees to speak with Carrie and make his choice then. By now we all know Eddie’s deal – he doesn’t represent the guilty. He has to believe you’re innocent to represent you! But it is quickly revealed that The Sandman will do whatever he has to in order to… motivate Eddie and Kate to ensure his wife’s freedom.

We have multiple POVs in The Accomplice – our usual Eddie Flynn takes most of the chapters but we also have The Killer as well as journal entries from Carrie (we also have chapters from his team and others)! I love it when Cavanagh includes POVs from more than just Eddie and his team – and as always the inclusion of the Killer’s own POV is an excellent decision!

I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Not only was on on the edge of my seat but this damn trial had me putting the book down briefly so I could work through what we knew and what we didn’t know so I could get my head on straight. It didn’t work. Cavanagh is a master of writing a courtroom trial, but he is also excellent at writing a plot that will catch you off guard – and believe me, I was CONFIDENT I had it all figured it out with this one…

I would say that The Accomplice has been the best one yet – and as you follow the series on goodreads, this has the best average rating (i’m obviously not including any books after this in the series)! I’m getting nervous now as I’m coming to the end of the available Eddie Flynn novels and I truly fear that I don’t know what my legal thriller life will be without an Eddie Flynn novel to read… These books and characters have become quite important to me! I truly look forward to my Eddie Flynn read every month! So I hope that Steve Cavanagh has no plans to stop writing them!

This was my favourite book of the series so far – I got the courtroom trial that I have come to love, the found family aspect that is Eddie’s team, plot twists that I saw coming but disguised the real magic happening… Cavanagh is truly getting better at his craft (and he was already pretty damn good). I think I will definitely have to read some of his other work once I catch up on Eddie Flynn. Welcome to the 6 star club, The Accomplice! Honestly, Eddie deserves it!

“Because when time is precious, every moment, every smile, every hug and every kiss counts.”
