I feel like July flew by and I barely read anything! I don’t know if this is down to the fact that I tried to prioritse the chunky books that normally get left behind… or because of the personal stuff going on in my life that made it somewhat hard to focus on books…
Regardless, I still love the prompt jar idea and I’m quite happy letting you know what all of my book club books are but picking one and focussing on just one book to read. I think this is working out for me!
So, first things first…
I’m in the middle of…
Blood & Betrayals by Jeanette Rose and Alexis Rune – Ebook, available through Kindle Unlimited
I was so scared about this one. But I knew, I just KNEW, that if I didn’t force myself to prioritise it, it would get left till the end of the month and not read. That being said, I’m not even 20% of the way through this yet!! So, having two books on the go at the same time that both feel like they’re never ending might not have been my smartest move…
To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods by Molly X. Chang – Ebook / Hardback
I needed some smaller books to read while I’ve got Blood & Betrayals on the go – because that is a behmouth of a book! This is the last smaller book on my TBR for July! At the time of writing this, I don’t have much to say as I’ve barely started! But, I am hoping that I love it!

Onto the fun stuff!
TBR Prompt (Haribo Tub) picks…
I added no additional prompts to the tub this month, and also it occurred to me I never mentioned that I don’t remove the prompts, they go back into the tub. I do give myself the option of a skip if I really need it (this is currently used a lot on the borrow a book from the library because I don’t want to find a book for the sake of it when I have loads on my shelves). I also will put back a prompt if it was used the month before, but other than that I go with what was picked.
To help with this – I now take out the prompts for the month and put them in a box (inside the tub) so that when I’m picking next months I won’t have to check to see if I already did it – then they get readded once the next months have been chosen.
Pick an upcoming Waterstones event – read either that book, or a book by that author (if you’ve already read it)
I chose the Steve Cavanagh event as I was originally hoping to go to this event! So, I will be reading Two Kinds of a Stranger by Steve Cavanagh! The latest installment in the Eddie Flynn series. This book releases July 31st!
Read a book with a colour in the title
I chose Rose in Chains by Julie Soto (with ROSE being the colour!) – honestly glancing over my bookshelf I really struggled to see any books that had been there longer than Rose in Chains that had a colour in the title… Then I decided on Rose in Chains and of course found other options. Typical!
Read a book by a female author
I could have done the next installment of Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas but as I did that a couple of months ago for this prompt, instead I chose The Fallen and the Kiss of Dusk by Carissa Broadbent, the next installement of the Crowns of Nyaxia series that releases August 5th! Mostly because there is no way I will not be reading this in August, and by adding it to a prompt it means I can do so guilt free!
Read an Owlcrate book
At the moment, I only own two Owlcrate books – I thought there would come a time where I’ve got a backlog of these books and need a kick to get through them… That time is not after having only received two boxes, ha! I’m trying to read Exquisite Ruin by Adrianne May already but I’m just not into it… So instead I chose my latest Owlcrate book, A Forbidden Alchemy by Stacey McEwan. Of course the picture below is not of the Owlcrate version, but just know that it is pretty!
Read a book that was adapted into a TV Show or Movie
It is shocking how difficult this one has been to pick. And at the time of writing this, I’m still torn and undecided. My three options are:
1. The Gunslinger by Stephen King (movie)
2. A Good Girls Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson (tv series)
3. Angels and Demons by Dan Brown (movie – the only one I’ve actually seen!)
It took some time, but I think I’m actually going to put two of the books on the TBR. Hear me out! Angels & Demons I have as an audiobook, which means it might be a good option for days where I don’t have time to physically read, because I’ve prioritised doing something else. But, for a physical read I’m going to put A Good Girls Guide to Murder onto the TBR for August. I purchased a really cute copy of it a while ago, and I really hate for the special editions to go wasted (if they were purchased to be read and not as trophies!).
Put your name in a wheel, and read a book where it is connected to the letter (i.e starts with the letter, focal word begins with the letter)
Empire of Shadows by Jacquelyn Benson was chosen! This was again a toss up between three, but when I asked my friends to help me pick two chose Empire of Shadows so that’s what we’re going with!
Just because, why not? The other options that were being looked at were:
1. Enigma by Runyx
2. An Ember in the Ashes by

Finally, Book Club Picks
Cody & James (Cody & James’ Book Club)
Leave it to Cody & James to have a vote that consists of all books and authors I’ve never heard of! I don’t know if this is because of their quest to read unhyped books, or if it’s just because these aren’t my usual genres. Unfortunately the book I voted for did not win the poll, and so I am not sure if I will choose These Summer Storms by Sarah Maclean over any of the other books on my TBR… Time will tell!
Emmy (What We’re Reading)
The voting has begun in Emmy’s Fable book club, and honestly I’d be happy with any of the books being chosen (one becuase i’ve already read it, and the others because I either already want to read them or they sound good!). I voted for Silvercloak by Lauren Steven but at the time of writing this, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E Schwab is winning – so we shall see what gets picked!
Update: The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue did indeed win the poll!
I will be removing Queen’s Hollow as one of the books I pick between each month, going forward. The reasons are my own, but I am not leaving the club! More like using it for recommendations. I haven’t yet decided if I will add one of the other clubs I’m in to this pool each month, or if I will just leave it as the two clubs I’m most active in.
