CERN Institute, Switzerland: a world-renowned scientist is found brutally murdered with a mysterious symbol seared onto his chest.
The Vatican, Rome: the College of Cardinals assembles to elect a new pope. Somewhere beneath them, an unstoppable bomb of terrifying power relentlessly counts down to oblivion.
In a breathtaking race against time, Harvard professor Robert Langdon must decipher a labyrinthine trail of ancient symbols if he is to defeat those responsible – the Illuminati, a secret brotherhood presumed extinct for nearly four hundred years, reborn to continue their deadly vendetta against their most hated enemy, the Catholic Church.
Review:
I have always wanted to read these books, but have always been scared too – I think I always made the assumption the books were too smart for me when I was a younger reader so I just avoided them. I am so so glad I waited to read Angels & Demons, and not becuase I was in fact too dumb to read them, but because it gave me chance to forget the movie’s almost entirely!
I loved Angels & Demons, I had a really good time reading this book. I loved the science, the conspiracy theories, the puzzle solving, the murder mystery! And it had SHORT chapters!! It felt like I was flying through it! I cannot begin to explain how much I was worried about the size of the Robert Langdon books when I first saw them on my partners shelves – but they’re SO readable.
I love Robert Langdon as a character – he’s so smart, with specific emphasis on his area of interest (religious iconography, if I remember correctly) and as a result is a damn good person to have trying to solve a series of puzzles before a bomb goes off atomising all of Vatican City… As I did immersive reading, I was also listening to the voice of Richard Poe and I’ve seen complaints about his performance as Robert, but honestly I thought the breath-y nature of his voice acting really worked for this character. I enjoyed it a lot.
I honestly couldn’t fault Angels & Demons at all, I genuinely loved it. I know there is a new Robert Langdon book releasing this year, which I’m sure no one had on their 2025 bingo cards, but I’m excited to now be on this journey! Finally reading the books that inspired (at least two) movies that I loved to watch with my parents!
“Science and religion are not at odds. Science is simply too young to understand.”
