Synopsis: Goodreads

When Addie La Rue makes a pact with the devil, she trades her soul for immortality. But there’s always a price – the devil takes away her place in the world, cursing her to be forgotten by everyone.

Addie flees her tiny home town in 18th-Century France, beginning a journey that takes her across the world, learning to live a life where no one remembers her and everything she owns is lost and broken. Existing only as a muse for artists throughout history, she learns to fall in love anew every single day.

Her only companion on this journey is her dark devil with hypnotic green eyes, who visits her each year on the anniversary of their deal. Alone in the world, Addie has no choice but to confront him, to understand him, maybe to beat him.

Until one day, in a second hand bookshop in Manhattan, Addie meets someone who remembers her. Suddenly thrust back into a real, normal life, Addie realises she can’t escape her fate forever.

Review:

I have been wanting to read Addie LaRue for a while, but never chose it over something else… that was until it was chosen as a book club pick for Emmy’s Fable Book Club in August. And I struggled with it, to tell you the truth. While I was reading / listening to it, I was in it. I was emotionally connected and I really wanted to know how it was going to work out (would it have a happy ending at all?! because I was in a perptual state of sadness). But as soon as I put it down, I all but forgot about it and moved on to something else…

Until, that wasn’t the case anymore. At some point between part 4 and 5 of this story, it had me hooked. And suddenly I was absolutely invested in Addie and Henry’s situation and could not wait to find out how this was going to play out. I was terrified it was going to break my heart, as the glimpses we were getting of that future heart break was bad enough…

It became all consuming. I was reading THROUGH tears because I simply couldn’t hold them back any longer. They had to fall, but I had to keep reading… When I reached the ending I was sobbing, ugly cry, sobbing. I had a brief moment where I whispered, good for you Addie, to myself and then it was back to the tears.

This was beautiful. I don’t think it needed to be as long as it was, there were chunks of time where it really wasn’t keeping my interest. However that ending… it made it all worth while. No spoilers on what that ending was, but have tissues if you plan to read it. You’ll need them.

“I remember you.”
