Deep in the jungles of eastern Colombia, Professor Jonas Lear has finally found what he’s been searching for – and wishes to God he hadn’t.
In Memphis, Tennessee, a six-year-old girl called Amy is left at the convent of the Sisters of Mercy and wonders why her mother has abandoned her.
In a maximum security jail in Nevada a convicted murderer called Giles Babcock has the same strange nightmare, over and over again, while he waits for a lethal injection.
In a remote community in the California mountains, a young man called Peter waits for his beloved brother to return home – so he can kill him.
Bound together in ways they cannot comprehend, for each of them a door is about to open into a future they could not have imagined. And a journey is about to begin. An epic journey that will take them through a world transformed by man’s darkest dreams, to the very heart of what it means to be human.
And beyond.
Review:
“Before she became the Girl from Nowhere-the One Who Walked In, the First and Last and Only, who lived a thousand years-she was just a little girl in Iowa, named Amy. Amy Harper Bellafonte.”
Andy has wanted me to read The Passage for a very long time – so I got the audiobook back when I had long commutes but I just never got round to it. He saw an opportunity when I was choosing my September TBR and he capitalised on it. And I am so grateful.
We begin with Amy Harper Bellafonte and learning about her life – albeit so so short at the start of this. We learn about an FBI agent called Brad Wolgast. We learn about a man who was charged with murder though he didn’t do it, Carter. We learn about so many characters at the start of this. And that’s because Justin Cronin spends the first two parts of this book explaining to you how we got to the point where the apocolypse had happened… And I absolutely loved these parts. Truly. Amy and Brad’s growing relationship was perfect. I loved the way Brad took Amy under his wing. And I loved how this stuck with Amy even 90-odd years later…
Yes, you heard me. After these parts we then jump a number of years and now we’re in the dystopian future where humankind is trying to survive the after effects of the apocolypse. And the cause of this? Man made vampires that break out of a maximum security facility. God fucking dammit I loved them.
The second batch of characters we meet weren’t all made equally in my opinion. But I did grow attached to a couple of them. I don’t see this as a bad thing – because I didn’t hate any of the second group of people. But I am intrigued as to how book 2 supposedly also continues on with this group. But I will 100% absolutely be picking up The Twelve because I liked Justin’s writing, I like the story he’s telling, and let me tell you after this story focussing on Babcock I cannot wait to find out about the rest of the Twelve. I just can’t wait.
“It’s all well and good to save the human race. You could say I’m in favor. But you might want to pay a little more attention to what’s right in front of you.”
