Murder.
Mayhem.
And spice.
Doctor Fionn Kane is running from a broken heart, one he hopes to mend in small-town Nebraska, far away from his almost-fiance and his derailed surgical career. It’s a simpler head down, hard work, and absolutely no romantic relationships. He wants none of the circus he left behind in Boston.
But then the real circus finds him.
Motorcycle performer Rose Evans has spent a decade on the road with the Silveria Circus, and it suits her just fine, especially when she has the urge to indulge in a little murder when she’s not in the spotlight. But when a kill goes awry and she ends up with an injured leg, Rose finds herself stuck in Nebraska, at the home of the adorably nerdy town doctor.
The problem is, not every broken heart can be sewn back together.
. . . And the longer you stay in one place, the more likely your ghosts are to catch up.
Review:
Scythe & Sparrow is book 3 in The Ruinous Trilogy and so there may be spoilers in the below for the first two books in the trilogy – Butcher & Blackbird and Leather & Lark. If there are spoilers for Scythe & Sparrow they will be hidden in order to keep my review spoiler free. Please check your trigger warnings at the start of the book before you read this book / this trilogy.
I was really nervous with Scythe & Sparrow, I gathered that the book was probably going to follow Fionn and Rose but I had no real opinion of either of them really. We didn’t spend too much time with them in order to form any real attachment to them – I felt – in Butcher & Blackbird nor Leather & Lark, though the end of Leather & Lark definitely had me concerned for Rose…
You know something that was fun about this one? Was the trip down memory lane that Weaver does! If you weren’t reading the books back to back like I was, I think you’d have really appreciated the trip we go on! Because Fionn and Rose pop up throughout the previous books hinting at their situation! So I very much enjoyed the pop ups of other characters as we were getting to know Fionn and Rose better.
The sad news is that it took me a lot longer to get into Scythe & Sparrow in comparison to books 1 and 2. I just struggled to see how they were ever going to a couple – not only that but Fionn kind of bored me and Rose just wasn’t as impressive in the serial killer department (like I’m an expert in the matter… sheesh!)…
But let me tell you, I was not left disappointed. Brynne Weaver really pulled me in and made me fall in love with these two as much as I had loved both of our previous couples. And honestly, I was so surprised about this! There was a moment with Fionn showing his true colours and everything just snapped into place for me. There also reached a point in this where I was actually leaking tears over their situation! And that had not happened in either of the previous books! So, whilst the start certainly took me some time to get into… the middle and the ending definitely had me wrapped around it’s pages.
I ultimately loved Scythe & Sparrow, and I am so so glad I picked up this trilogy! There is a fourth book, I think it’s a prequel and yeah I’ll probably read that, but I feel really good ending my journey with these characters right now as it wrapped up beautifully! So, even though books 2 and 3 got 4.5 star reviews, I think this trilogy overall is a 5 star trilogy.
“But I am not done fighting for you. I love you. I’m not letting you go. I never will.”
