Chaol Westfall and Nesryn Faliq have arrived in the shining city of Antica to forge an alliance with the Khagan of the Southern Continent, whose vast armies are Erilea’s last hope. But they have also come to Antica for another purpose: to seek healing at the famed Torre Cesme for the wounds Chaol received in Rifthold.
After enduring unspeakable horrors as a child at the hands of Adarlanian soldiers, Yrene Towers has no desire to help the young lord from Adarlan, let alone heal him. Yet she has sworn an oath to assist those in need, and she will honour it. But Lord Westfall carries his own dark past, and Yrene soon realises that those shadows could engulf them both.
Chaol, Nesryn, and Yrene will have to draw on every scrap of their resilience to overcome the danger that surrounds them. But while they become entangled in the political webs of the khaganate, long-awaited answers slumber deep in the mountains, where warriors soar on legendary ruks. Answers that might offer their world a chance at survival … or doom them all.
Review:
Tower of Dawn is book 6 in the Throne of Glass series, which means there may be spoilers for the previous books in the below. However, a lot of readers choose to read Empire of Storms and Tower of Dawn in tandem as they’re set at the same time. Whilst I did not do that, I will also hide all spoilers for Empire of Storms (if there are any) as if that was the book I was reading, just in case.
I went into Tower of Dawn a bit apprehensive. Mostly because I knew we were going back in time as Tower of Dawn is happening at the same time of Empire of Storms and that annoyed me as I wanted answers from EoS. But also because I was not a Chaol lover and I knew this was his book. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t hate Chaol, because after Queen of Shadows I think if you didn’t at least turn your opinion a bit for him!? I can’t imagine it. But I wasn’t excited for a book totally about him…
Let me be clear – coming out the other end of Tower of Dawn, I am a Chaol lover. I love him and will protect him with my whole heart throughout Kingdom of Ash (gosh am I scared for this book!) because after everything he’s gone through in Tower of Dawn, he deserves that. He goes into this book without use of his legs, seeking healing as well as an army to join Aelin and Dorian’s fight against Erawan… And you’ll have to read it to find out if he succeeds. But let me tell you, when you get to the end of Tower of Dawn, I simply don’t think it isn’t possible to not love him…
Yrene, a returning character from Assassin’s Blade, is a breath of fresh air. I adored her, and I was beyond thrilled when I made the connection that she was the same girl that was convinced way back when to go to the Torre and learn to be a healer because, “the world needs more healers”! Because she bloody did it! And I was so proud of her for that. I loved following her story throughout Tower of Dawn!
She wasn’t the only unexpected joy – other characters like Nesryn, Sartaq and Borte were also absolute joys. In fact, I shed tears during this book, and those tears were in connection to some of these unexpected joys!! Not Chaol!! Maas is setting me up for a painful Kingdom of Ash, I’m convinced of it… Because I’m going into this book with not a single character that I’m willing to see die and that is TERRIFYING…
Now, for the spoilers… This spoils the ending of Empire of Storms and gives hints towards something we learn in Tower of Dawn so please don’t read this unless you’ve read both!
At the end of Empire of Storms, we are left with uhhhh quite the situation. With Aelin now in two places at once due to the whole giving herself over, I’m genuinely so scared for how it is possible for this to be handled in Kingdom of Ash? Because the LORE DROP we get Tower of Dawn just makes it so much worse than it was already… I’d spent months so nervous about how Rowan and the team were going to rescue Aelin and NOW?! Now the FEAR I have!! I’m very glad I got to experience that in the same way that everyone who read this series as it was coming out got!
I have tried to read fantasy after Tower of Dawn and I couldn’t do it… I’ll either have to genre switch or abandon the TBR and pick up Kingdom of Ash sooner than I expected to… And I’m so happy that Tower of Dawn has had that effect on me!! An easy 5 star read, and honestly may be joint with Queen of Shadows as my favourite book in the series!!
“Fight it […] you sturbborn bastard, fight it.”
