Eighteen-year-old Trinity Marrow may be going blind, but she can see and communicate with ghosts and spirits. Her unique gift is part of a secret so dangerous that she’s been in hiding for years in an isolated compound fiercely guarded by Wardens—gargoyle shape-shifters who protect humankind from demons. If the demons discover the truth about Trinity, they’ll devour her, flesh and bone, to enhance their own powers.
When Wardens from another clan arrive with disturbing reports that something out there is killing both demons and Wardens, Trinity’s safe world implodes. Not the least because one of the outsiders is the most annoying and fascinating person she’s ever met. Zayne has secrets of his own that will upend her world yet again—but working together becomes imperative once demons breach the compound and Trinity’s secret comes to light. To save her family and maybe the world, she’ll have to put her trust in Zayne. But all bets are off as a supernatural war is unleashed…
Review:
This may have been a re-read for me, but it was perfect timing. Right as I was falling out of love with the authors newest work, an old friend came by and reminded me why I loved her stuff to begin with (thanks Zayne!)…
Storm & Fury is the first book in the spin off series to The Dark Elements trilogy that I love so much. In which, we follow Zayne and Trinity as they have to fgure out how to save her family, save the world and try to prevent supernatural war…
I already had pretty strong feelings on Zayne when I read this the first time round, and I forgot that this book made me appreciate and love Zayne. Well the second time round (and lucky you, it’s the first time this is actually getting reviewed) it made me love Zayne. Not as much as Roth, I’ll concede, but still. Which was something I didn’t expect. But I suppose Trinity brings out the best in him!
Trinity is our half human, half angel, in a world where angels don’t procreate with humans (just as with Layla, Wardens and Demons don’t procreate!), only this time Trinity has grown up knowing her father is going to call on her to help with something and she must be ready for it. Well, sign me up because I’m 100% here for this. Trinity is also representing a degenerative disease that JLA also has: RP, Retinitis Pigmentosa which is always appreciated in our FMCs. So, even though she’s dealing with visual difficulties, she still makes it work for her (and also leads to some very adorable moments between her and Zayne).
I loved the relationship these two had from the get go – both of them with their walls up, but both open enough to bicker and have the back and forth we have come to expect from our fantasy MCs who we are hoping will get over themselves and realise they actually really like each other… And I don’t expect that to stop in the second book, though given the ending of Storm and Fury, it will definitely be more… complicated now!
Now obviously, the main twist in the story I did already know because I had read this already on release. Which does mean that I had the experience of figuring out if there were tells for it while listening to it this second time – and I did spot a couple of things that would have revealed the twist but honestly I think these were only noticible because I knew the twist! I thought it was clever, and even now I have no idea how the rest of this trilogy is going to go! But I’m so excited to finish it!
Storm & Fury wasn’t actually released all that long ago – 2019! So, it is fairly close to the relase of the From Blood And Ash era of JLA’s writing, so I absolutely still see the same author in the work… But this was a time where the adult series were usually trilogies and the spice, if there was spice, was still minimal – it wasn’t every chapter or every page… So if you like Jennifer’s stories and writing, but just need less of the spice, trust me – go to her back log and work your way through it! There are some gems there!

“It is, but the only ones that matter are the ones you see.”
