This has been a hard one. Last year I feel like it was somewhat difficult to narrow down to a top ten… This year it’s been hard just to get a top 20 let alone a top 10!!
So, I will accept no criticism of my top ten! Can I necessarily justify why each of these books are there OVER another book? No, maybe not. But I can tell you why each of these books got onto my top ten; by the end of 2025 I was still thinking about them!!!
They aren’t in any order either because asking me to choose my favourites was hard enough, but asking me to order them is damn near cruel… Except for the top three, those are my top three… just again, not in any order…
Before we get into the top 10, these are the 5 books that battled with this list to try and get on the list hardest in my head, but ultimately just lost out…

Like I said, ultimately they lost out and didn’t get onto the top ten list however they fought hard!
Number 10
A FORBIDDEN ALCHEMY BY STACEY MCEWAN

I said it at the time, and I’ll say it again, I ate this up! I thought this was going to be a totally predictible story (still not sure if that meant I missed the signs due to my own arrogance or if they were just so well hidden!) and it wasn’t!
Also, can we take a second to appreciate that not only does this have a stunning hardback cover as standard, but it got a beautiful owlcrate special edition AND the paperback releasing next year is absolutely beautiful?!
I cannot wait for book 2!!
Number 9
TOWER OF DAWN BY SARAH J. MAAS

This was perfection; it was a beautiful example of what a character arc can be. I went into this certainly not a fan of our MC Chaol, but by the end of it I loved him and those around him so much. And so much so that by the time I got to the end of Kingdom of Ash, it was these characters that I wanted more books on… Not the main cast.
I loved this book, and it’s such a shame that it doesn’t get the love that it deserves. It was, I think, the best book in the series, with Queen of Shadows being a very close second.
Number 8
TWO KINDS OF STRANGER BY STEVE CAVANAGH

Woah, a legal thriller made it into my top ten? Yes. It did.
Two Kinds of Stranger was excellent! I was on my toes throughout and absolutely hooked on the story being told.
Cavanagh does not mind taking shots at his own good guys which means even though this is an interconnected series, I never know for sure who is ‘guranteed’ to make it out alive… At this point, I’m not even sure Eddie is safe.
Absolutely love these books, and if you enjoy a crime show (think Law & Order, CSI…) then they’re absolutely worth giving a go!
Number 7
THE IMRATI TRIALS BY LIZZY GAYLE

As I said, each of these books got into the top ten because they stuck with me. It doesn’t matter what they’re ratings are, if they stuck with me then they had a damn good chance of making it into the top ten…
Lizzy Gayle blew me away with The Imrati Trials; much like A Forbidden Alchemy, I was so convinced I knew what was going to happen that I didn’t see any other possibility… and then I got to the ending and my jaw stayed on the floor. Looking back, I see the hints to the ending but I just did not connect those dots. Phenomenal. Also, who doesn’t love a little baby dragon!?
Number 6
BLOOD & BETRAYALS BY JEANETTE ROSE & ALEXIS RUNE

Oh boy… Blood & Betrayals… I’ll tell you what; there is for sure some betraying going on. And it’s these authors betraying my trust, because that ending was awful and I still haven’t recovered from it.
I adore a found family, you all know that by now, and Blood & Betrayals gave us an amazing found family that own my heart for how much I adore them! (The Moringstars!!! Hello <3).
Book 2 is set to release in 2026, but I think it’s been pushed back slightly due to being picked up for Trad! I’m very excited! (I could also be wrong on the being pushed back thing!)
I will say, though there is no order, the top three had to be THE top three, you know? And these next 3 books gave me some serious grief over that third spot…
Number 5
bUTCHER & BLACKBIRD BY BRYNNE WEAVER

This is such an unexpected entry onto my top ten! I chose to read this book because I got a prompt that was read a book outside of your comfort zone and absolutely could not have predicted it would end up being one of my most loved books of the year.
But it is. These characters, from the whole trilogy, are amazing and I love them. But I will always have a soft spot for Rowan and Sloane, their banter and dynamic was everything. And I loved their love. They just bring me so much joy!
Number 4
SPARK OF THE EVERFLAME BY PENN COLE

I cannot believe I almost didn’t pick this up!!! It was on my 12 books to read in 2025 list and I was not feeling the desire to read Spark and kept putting it off… we reached December and I was ready to throw in the towel.
Thank God I didn’t! Because this was phenomenal!! I loved Diem and Luther, I am so intrigued by the story and I absolutely cannot wait to keep reading this series! I can’t believe I almost missed out on getting to love this book as much as I do…
Number 3
sILVERCLOAK BY L.K. STEVEN

Another ‘I can’t believe I almost didn’t read this!’ book, only I knew I was always going to get to Silvercloak! I just kept forgetting about it because it doesn’t sit on my TBR cart anymore and I forgot that I moved the sprayed edges off the cart – not because I’d read them, but because I wanted to display the edges…
This was excellent – the premise was perfectly executed, it’s in a world with wand based magic where it is fuelled by pleasure and can be enhanced by pain. I adored IT, I loved our main characters and that CLIFFHANGER! I need Book 2 immediately and I will sell my first born for it.
These two have been my top two ever since I started considering ‘my favourite book of the year’ but they keep switching places… Am I 100% happy with the order they’re in at the moment? No, I’m sure I’ll change it between now and posting and I’m sure after posting my mind will change over and over again… but I do simply love these books…
Number 2
BLOOD OVER BRIGHT HAVEN BY M.L. WANG

This damn book wrecked me. It is also the only stand alone that made it into my top ten (though two others did fight for it too!).
I went into it knowing very little but I was drawn in by the ‘for fans of…’ recommendation – for fans of Full Metal Alchemist. I thought that was odd, but I adore that anime and so I signed myself up.
This book was astounding, and beautiful. It had me sobbing my heart out at the end as it was so damn beautiful. And it really had me questioning whether it’s enough to have good intentions or whether you truly do need to do good actions as well to be a good person… This book is beautiful and I’ve been bothering my friends all year to read it!!
Number 1
sHIELD OF SPARROWS BY DEVNEY PERRY

I devoured this book, I was 100% along for the ride. I loved the characters, the mystery around some of them, as well as the banter! There is a wonderful found family brewing that I cannot wait to see more of in the second book.
And this story?! Hello!! I’m still blown away by the twist revealed at the end of this book! I thought things were bad enough but then that happened!
I will be unwell if I do not get to read book 2 on release because if one person spoils anything for me, I will dramatically claim my life is ruined.
Picking a top ten is torture most years… but I read over 100 books this year (121 at the time of writing this) and so I found it extra difficult…
I had been trying to narrow down my top ten since October – I knew I wanted room for possible other books to come in and sweep a spot but I wanted to have an idea so I could start drawing out this post… It took me months of back and forth arguging with myself and past ratings and book of the month picks…
Ultimately, I chose to ignore the book of the month picks – they can have their own battle! And the ratings! I came to the realisation in December that because I rate so quickly after finishing a book, there are a lot of books rated higher than they should have been (I’m pretty good at amending a lower rating quite quickly but higher is hard for me…) so I couldn’t even depend on the ratings of past Tyler to pick the top ten…
So we decided to go with what stuck with me. Naturally, that was a hard list to narrow down, so we do have some honourable mentions as well – yes, in addition to the five that really gave me crap over getting into the top ten list…

Honourable Mentions: Shadow & Storms, Onyx Storm, On Wings of Blood, Metal Slinger, For Whom the Belle Tolls, Fairydale, Sunrise on the Reaping, Direbound, City of Gods and Monsters, Quicksilver (it’s a reread), Storm and Fury (it’s a reread), The Rose Bargain (for breaking me out of a reading slump after my Nan died), A Dance of Lies.
