Can you believe we’re in 2026? It’s kind of crazy to think about really. But here we are, prepping for our January TBR! You’ll see this post a little into January, but I picked my TBR a bit earlier than that!! I did enjoy the break from a more in depth TBR in December, but I know I can’t do that kind of free reign too often as the choice is overwhelming!!
We are back to tackling my TBR with at least 6 prompts this month, plus whatever I’m in the middle of, plus the book club read… And I also really need to try and tackle some of the eARCs that I’ve received! That being said, ARCs will never be included in the TBR! They will get picked up, when they get picked up!
While picking my TBR this month, we are keeping in mind the books that are on my TBR Cart and the books that are part of existing series. I did finally get off the waitlist for Fairyloot as well, so I want to try and keep on top of my special editions from Owlcrate and Fairyloot so I don’t get overwhelmed with feeling guilty that I have spots on these lists but are letting the books build up… So, without any further waiting… here is my January TBR!
So, first things first…
I’m in the middle of…

Golden Son by Pierce Brown – Paperback / Kindle
I am taking Golden Son into the new year with me as it was what I started in the evening of the 31st (I read 26 pages before the clock struck 12… go me) and so it’s coming with me! I haven’t read enough yet to say if I am enjoying it or not… but I will say I’m surprised at how lost I feel right at the start! We shall see if that continues.
Onto the fun stuff!
Picks from the TBR Prompt Jar!
We have a new selection of prompts for 2026! I’m sure I will either run out or add to the jar at some point, but this is a good starting point for the new year!
1. Phone a friend; give them a choice of colours. Based on the colour they picked, pick a read where the cover / edges match
I put a message into my groups discord that I had this prompt and needed assistance. My friend Kate joined me in a call, I gave her Blue, Red and Yellow. She chose blue and then specified a teal… So, I chose Skyshade by Alex Aster! I am unlikely to do a reread of Lightlark and Nightbane before reading Skyshade, and I believe the Oro and Grim Novellas are after Skyshade! But we shall see if I end up pulling those out and reading them as well!
2. Read a book from your 26 in 2026
Look at my prompt jar, having my back already! Good job really, because it’s the only book from my 26 in 2026 list that has made it into the January TBR… And after some deliberation I chose The Second Death of Locke by V.L. Bovalino, and then my fiancé revealed that he’d got me a special edition of this book because I don’t love the cover, for Christmas. I love him for that!
3. Read an Owlcrate book
I only have one left on my shelf unread, and that’s What Fury Brings by Tricia Levenseller, hands down one of the most beautiful covers I’ve gotten from Owlcrate… (of the three I have gotten…) But truely, it is beautiful and I’m excited to read this!
4. Load up your Kindle and read the first “recommended based on your reading history” option that is on Kindle Unlimited – Prompt from my friend James, @fictionaljames on TikTok
This couldn’t have worked out any better for me! The first recommendation that is on Kindle Unlimited that I came across was Glow of the Everflame by Penn Cole, and I loved Spark of the Everflame so I am definitely excited to have an excuse to pick this one up in January.
5. Pick a number between 2 and 5 using a random number generator. Read a book from your Goodreads TBR with average rating closest to that number – Prompt from my fiancé
This one was fun! And because he was in the room with me when I was picking these, he actually amended his prompt on the fly – it had to be a book I already owned. This meant when we got the number 3 and checked my Goodreads TBR we landed on Ready Player Two by Ernest Cline – a book he simply couldn’t believe that I hadn’t read yet given how much I love Ready Player One!
6. Read a book with the SHORTEST title on your TBR cart
I saw Atmosphere and immediately thought it was going to be that because it’s a single word title – but then my fiancé and Kate (who yes, was still in a call with us) pointed out that single word title didn’t mean shortest so we kept looking… Finally we spotted Gild by Raven Kennedy, at 4 letters long, it is the shortest title on my cart! I’m kind of nervous about this one, but ultimately not angry about it getting picked!

Digital TBR Take Down
There is no Digital TBR Take Down this month as half of my TBR I have on my kindle so we are making progress on both my Digital and Physical TBR without any additional influence from me!
Book Club Picks
Bailee’s Book Club – We Who Will Die by Stacia Stark
The Final Chapter – She normally posts this later than the others, I’ll update!
What We’re Reading – The Second Death of Locke by V.L. Bovalino
