I wanted to be kinder to myself in December and so set a small TBR so that I’d have the freedom to jump around as I wanted to. And yet somehow, I still didn’t feel like I could jump around as much as I wanted to! I think, ultimately this comes down to the fact that I just have such a large TBR that I often feel like I should be reading something else no matter what I’ve chosen… That being said,I don’t regret my decision! And if it was any month other than December, I probably would have done a 24 hour reading challenge to make the most of having more free reign on my TBR.

Here is what I read in December

December was an excellent reading month – nothing below a 3.5 star rating!! I even discovered one of my favourite reads of the year; Spark of the Everflame!! Though honestly, A Dance of Lies I absolutely loved as well!!

Book Bracket Entry – Favourite Book of the Month

Spark of the Everflame by Penn Cole

As soon as I started this book I got the 5 star feelings. I went on to absolutely love this book and it ended up becoming one of my favourites of the year! I’m so annoyed with myself for letting the internet’s very strong us vs them opinions on this book sway me and prevent me from reading it for so long!

A Dance of Lies by Brittney Arena

This was a total unexpected edition to my December reading, and I don’t regret it. I picked it up initially because it sounded brilliant but then never read it!! I have no idea why, I just kept passing it over for something else. Well, I’m glad I finally read it because it was excellent! I love our FMC and I love the story! I’m scared for book 2 though.

Biggest Surprise of the Month

Brimstone by Callie Hart

I reread Quicksilver in December which reminded me how much I loved these characters. That meant I went into Brimstone expecting to love it and I sadly didn’t love it as much as I had hoped to. Kingfisher and Carrion however were excellent and their banter was top notch. I will definitely still read book 3, and I’m hoping that it brings the excitement back!

General Reflection

Honestly, this December wasn’t the best in terms of my Christmas spirit coming to the party – there was just a lot going on out of my control and externally that was impacting me. It ended up being a huge blessing that my TBR was so short and I could read what I wanted to read alongside it because it did help knowing I had that bit of freedom with my books when I had very little freedom else where.

A tough month in that sense, but a great month in the reading sense. 3.5 stars was the lowest rating I gave (to three reads)! So all in all, I can’t fault my month on that front. Like I said, if anything I ended up being pretty grateful for my reading time even if it I was burnt out in other areas.

We’re ending 2025 with some great reads and some new series for me to obsess over in the new year… (I’m looking at you, Spark of the Everflame!).
