An unexpected gift offers the power to change everything. Keeping it could cost Diem her life.

But as she dives into the world of the Descended elite, Diem quickly realizes good and evil aren’t as simple as they seem. Old prejudices are challenged, and new loyalties blur the line between friend and foe.

Meanwhile, her mother is still missing, and the secrets she left behind can no longer be ignored—and neither can the Guardians and their demands. Caught between an old flame and a sizzling new spark, Diem must confront the truth about who she is and what she wants before time runs out.

War is coming, and dangerous enemies wait on all sides.. but the most deadly battle Diem faces may be the one for her heart.

Review:

Glow of the Everflame is the second book in the Kindred’s Curse saga, with the first book being Spark of the Everflame. There will be spoilers for Spark in the review below, but spoilers for Glow will be hidden.

“If a kiss is the reward, my Queen, I’ll get on my knees for you whenever you want.”

After being caught off guard by the ending of Spark of the Everflame, I truly wasn’t sure what I was going into with book 2! Because if Diem is truly a mortal as she believes then why has she been crowned? But if it turns out she is not mortal, but half descended, who the heck is her father? And what are her powers? Surely if she just had healing abilities she wouldn’t be stronger than Luther right? The presumptive Heir?!

Well, just as I’m trying to figure out who and what Diem is, so is everyone else in the realm that realises she’s their new Queen. And WHAT A JOURNEY we go on! If I thought Diem was already in a stressful situation in book 1, it has nothing on her situation in book 2 (which believe me has me real scared about book 3!). But what I liked most about Diem in this book, is the growth we see her go through. The Diem we end Glow with is not the same Diem as we began Spark with, or even Glow. And I loved that for her.

We also find out more about some of the other Corbois’ and the other houses in Glow, but I specifically care about those who are quickly becoming Diem’s found family. You know me by now, if there is a bloody good found family in a book you’ve got a solidily strong chance of me loving it. And seeing how she builds hers within the pages of Glow were heart warming and comforting – because believe me I am still beyond nervous about where this story is going to go, but knowing she has her chosen few around her is just excellent.

We do see more of Luther and Henri in Glow which definitely continues to make things complicated for Diem. But I chose my end game pairing in spark and I’m sticking with it regardless of what happens. The yearning that happens on these pages! I love it, I’m here for it. And if you love a slow burn that’s starting to pay off, then you have to give these characters a chance.

I can’t exactly pinpoint why it didn’t get a 5 star rating – I didn’t have the same feeling throughout the whole read that I did with Spark. I still loved it, I thought the pacing was excellent, the characters continue to be brilliant and the growth and yearning for only the second book in the series! Yes please. But I just didn’t come away with that 5 star feeling.

Okay, spoilers below for the ending of Glow.

Whislt I can’t exactly pinpoint why Glow didn’t get a 5 star rating, I can definitely talk about something I didn’t like quite as much as I had hoped to. Diem’s mother. At the end of Spark I truly thought Diem’s mother was going to be returning and playing a bigger part in Glow. We didn’t get that. In fact, I don’t think I like what Diem’s mother was up to at the end of the book. Maybe it’s just because I felt Diem worked bloody hard to get herself into a position where she could be Queen and make change and now it’s ruined… But I’ll have to read Heat of the Everflame in order to know for sure I suppose!

“Burn, my Queen. Glow so bright, the darkness trembles.”

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
