Synopsis: Goodreads
Ami awakes from years in stasis to find she’s at the edges of deep space, and the only surviving member of her crew.
Utterly alone and unable to contact Earth, she sends out a distress beacon, not expecting a response. When she gets one from a being who calls himself Dorian, she’s welcomed onto his ship as he offers his assistance in any way he can.
But nothing on Dorian’s ship is as it seems. And as Ami tries to navigate the maze of hallways and first contact with this alien being, a deep hum begins to resonate, haunting her, as if the ship itself is whispering to her.
Review:
I…
What did I just read?
I spent the majority of this novella confused as anything. What we were being told, wasn’t matching what the character was seeing or feeling, or hearing! So, confused… I’ve checked other reviews of Thrum and they seem to be saying the same thing – this novella was 166 pages of gas lighting… goodness?
I don’t know if I should be thanking this author for baffling me in the way she did, or screaming What the Fuck at the top of my lungs?! It was like a haunting, mental breakdown, psychological mess? Anyone who successfully describes what Thrum is without spoiling anything, I bow down to them because I’m left speechless after finishing it.
I think I liked it. Ha, truly, I think I liked this. But I don’t know for sure. I can’t even figure out if I would recommend this, because it was truly bizarre. But I did get goosebumps, I was creeped out and it’s less than 200 pages! So, perhaps it’s a good choice if you want a quick creepy read. But I warn you, it is weird.
Spoilers for the reveal at the end of the novella – do not read this if you haven’t read Thrum
Okay, soooooo I was questioning each time she was sexually involved with Dorian what the hell he was… and then we find out and my brain just cannot wrap my head around it?! I have no idea what to make of the reveal that he ‘is the ship’, the hive mind situation? I feel like the ‘reveal’ only confused me and baffled me more!!
