Love too grand, it kills.
Mara never intended to set foot in Ilya again. But when the king makes a life-altering decision, her interest is piqued, and Death is determined to understand Kitt Azer’s mind if he is destined to join her in the Mors.
Spending time with the king while observing the castle’s inhabitants reminds Mara that there is more to life than just death. There is love. But even the purest of intentions spur revenge and the pursuit of power. And fate will have its way with all of them—to live, to rule, to love, and most certainly, to die….
Review:
Fearful was the unexpected novella after Fearless in Lauren Roberts’ Powerless trilogy! So, there are likely spoilers for the first two books, but I’ll keep spoilers for Fearless and Fearful hidden, as Fearful happens at the same time as Fearless.
After finishing Fearless, I think a lot of people were left confused and with questions – then Fearful was announced. And I have no idea what it was announced as or when it was announced, but for some reason I had it in my head that it was supposed to explain things that happened in Fearful that had caused confusion, so I went into this expecting further answers. And, you kind of get them!
Fearful follows two plot lines from Fearless – the first being King Kitt and what’s going on there (again, trying to keep this spoiler free for Fearless as well!) and the second being Lenny and Blair, told from the POV of a watcher named Mara. Oh and Mara just so happens to be death. I loved Mara’s chapters that focussed on Lenny and Blair but the chapters with Mara interacting with Kitt… I just…
Okay, basically after Fearless Kitt as a character was ruined in my eyes – and honestly Fearful didn’t help. I still don’t like him, I still don’t understand his motives. I still just think he went mad. So, I really enjoyed a good amount of this book and I didn’t totally hate Kitt during a few chapters. That feels like a win. But ultimately, it didn’t provide satisfying reasons for why things happened (though the Kai vs Kitt thing that happened in Fearless got a pretty cool elaboration in Fearful, I’ll admit! – IYKYK).
I enjoyed Fearful, I’d recommend it to those who have read the series because you might as well complete it (and honestly for Lenny and Blair alone, it’s worth it). But it’s not brilliant.
An edit from the future Tyler writing the review, I gave this a 3.5 but honestly I enjoyed Fearless more than I enjoyed Fearful… so I’m actually lowering the rating to 3 stars. It was alright, it was worth reading to finish the books off and I did like Lenny and Blair, but I definitely enjoyed it the least out of the Powerless books.
