Synopsis: Goodreads

Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why — or even who Tobias Hawthorne is.

To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man’s touch — and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes. Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a conwoman, and he’s determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather’s last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege, with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.

Review:

Curses, if I hadn’t started this just before midnight I would have rest this book in one day. Not quite one sitting as I did have stuff to do, but my entire Saturday revolved around this book! Talk about going into something with mild expecations, I just hoped it would be good, only to have such a good time with it!!

“Traps upon traps. And riddles upon riddles.”

From the get go I was looking forward to reading this one – but because I’m still convinced that some time ago I heard a lot of good stuff about this series! But ultimately, I knew it was going to be about a girl who mysteriously received an inheritance from a rich man she doesn’t know which would annoy his family. That’s it. And I really enjoyed this mystery!

The riddles were fun, and whilst I did depend on Avery and the brothers to unravel some of the, once we had the information I was also trying to figure out what the hell was going on along side them. I really like our main characters – Avery handled the situation very well in my opinion though her friendship was definitely tested throughout… Libby is a likeable character, but some bad decisions do have me torn on whether she can be trusted or not going forward. The brothers are their own messed up bag of backstories to try and get through… Nash doesn’t sit right with me, but I do love him and I am hoping that he doesn’t turn out to have a bad ulterior motive because I think this mysterious element to him might make him my favourite brother. Xander I like, but he might actually be my least favourite brother. Then there is Greyson and Jameson… and dare I say, I think I prefer Greyson? I’m a bit flip floppy on this though, I’ll admit…

“We aren’t normal. This place isn’t normal, and you’re not a player, kid. You’re the glass ballerina—or the knife.”

I loved the mystery of the inheritance, and I loved the ending – I’m very much looking forward to reading book 2. However, I didn’t love the story. The Emily storyline felt a bit pointless to me, and just led me to dislike Jameson more than it did anything else… I get the connections, I just didn’t think it was necessary. And the romance? I could have done without it in the way it’s delivered. Perhaps that will change as the books go on, but we’ll see…

I am so glad I finally picked this one up as I really did enjoy it! It has definitely been on my TBR for too long – so thank you to the prompt jar for a push on this one!

“He left you the fortune, Avery, and all he left us is you.”
