Synopsis: Goodreads

Mare Barrow is a prisoner, powerless without her lightning, tormented by her lethal mistakes. She lives at the mercy of a boy she once loved, a boy made of lies and betrayal. Now a king, Maven Calore continues weaving his dead mother’s web in an attempt to maintain control over his country—and his prisoner.

As Mare bears the weight of Silent Stone in the palace, her once-ragtag band of newbloods and Reds continue organizing, training, and expanding. They prepare for war, no longer able to linger in the shadows. And Cal, the exiled prince with his own claim on Mare’s heart, will stop at nothing to bring her back.

When blood turns on blood, and ability on ability, there may be no one left to put out the fire—leaving Norta as Mare knows it to burn all the way down.

Review:

King’s Cage is the third installment in the Red Queen series, and as such there may be spoilers below for previous books in the series.

I think the romance is a sub-sub plot at this point. I’m missing it somewhat? But honestly with the story and plot that we are being given, I am not finding it to be absolutely vital that romance is at the top again. King’s Cage does bring with it it’s own challenges – we have multiple POVs now. I suppose given Mare’s prediciment that makes sense, but it was a bit of a shock to the system to see Cameron’s POV and later Evangeline’s POV. I will say I am not a fan of the multiple POVs here, I don’t feel like they added anything that was really necessary – they weren’t awful, I just didn’t need them…

That being said, Victoria Aveyard knows how to play with emotions. Glass Sword left me with chills and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on King’s Cage. The first half of this book Mare is a prisoner in Maven’s home, trapped and guarded by those who can silence her and made to do Maven’s bidding in front of camera’s for Norta and beyond to see… I was on edge any and every time Mare was dragged out of her cage! But much like Mare, I held onto hope throughout and I think it served me well!

I really like where the plot is going with this series, I personally hope for a bit for more on the romance in the coming book (which I think is possible!) but the political intrigue is upping! And I’m enjoying it! I will say, if you thought in the first book keeping track of the Houses and abilities was hard, just wait until King’s Cage. I ended up sort of just grouping Houses together into ones I knew I needed to know about and the ones that were background Houses as names were thrown around quite a bit.

If you’re a fan of action, then King’s Cage is the installment for you! There was plenty of it and reading those scenes always felt like they blurred by because I definitely read them faster! It was fast paced, with lots of risk and danger and the worry of possible outcomes had me wishing I could just inhale those chapters and know the outcome faster. Alright, that’s an odd comment I’ll admit! But I am sure you’ve had moments where you just can’t read fast enough!

All in all, I’m excited for more Mare and Cal and hopefully Maven (I really think he’s a great villain for this series! I do hate that I love him, but I do think he’s great.) in the finale. I knew a storm was coming, and King’s Cage delivered. But war is brewing, and I truly have no idea how it will end.

“Those who know what it’s like in the dark will do anything to stay in the light.”
