Six roses. Six vials of blood. Six visits to a vampire who could be her salvation… or her damnation.
Lilith has been dying since the day she was born. But while she long ago came to terms with her own imminent death, the deaths of everyone she loves is an entirely different matter. As her town slowly withers in the clutches of a mysterious god-cursed illness, she takes matters into her own hands.
Desperate to find a cure, Lilith strikes a bargain with the only thing the gods hate even more than her village: a vampire, Vale. She offers him six roses in exchange for six vials of vampire blood–the one hope for her town’s salvation.
But when what begins as a simple transaction gradually becomes something more, Lilith is faced with a terrifying realization: It’s dangerous to wander into the clutches of a vampire… and in a place already suffering a god’s wrath, more dangerous still to fall in love with one.
Review:
Six Scorched Roses completed a square on my 2025 Challenge Bingo Board! It made me cry! Onto the review…
Additionally, Six Scorched Roses is part of the Crowns of Nyaxia world, intended to be read after Serpent but before Ashes… I ignored it and read it after Songbird… but I will try and keeps spoilers to a minimum for the books that come after it (Ashes & Songbird).
Where do I begin with Six Scorched Roses? I adored it. I didn’t have many expectations going into it as I discovered towards the end of 2024 that short stories weren’t really for me. But I always intended to read the two stand alones connected to the Crowns of Nyaxia world, despite my opinion on short stories. I therefore did not expect to love this book, and the characters within it to the point I was crying for them!
Let’s start with Lillith – Lillith and her town are cursed / plagued and they’re all dying. Some quicker than others. In a your skin is turning to dust and you’re becoming nothing till one day you’re ashes on the floor. Sheesh. And so she’s looking for a cure! And that’s how we really begin. Lillith is getting no where with her other endevours to find a cure and so she decides to visit the vampire living in the town – Vale. Now here is where the problems start… this town despite being cursed and ignored by their God are still blessed with magic and magically enhanced equipment… and of course their God is one of the White Pantheon who hate Nyaxia – the Godess of the Vampires… So, I’m sure you can see where the problem begins before Lillith has even taken a step towards Vale!
It starts out with a simple deal – 6 Roses for 6 Vials of Blood. Vale agrees because Lillith tells him there is something special about the roses. And so we go on this short journey as Lillith brings a rose in exchange for a few vials of blood from Vale and slowly a romance blossoms.
AND BOY DID IT! I adored Vale and Lillth. Knowing what I know about Ashes, I’m honestly really happy I read this AFTER I had already read Ashes even though it’s recommend you read it first. Personally I enjoyed the not knowing whether or not Vale could be trusted in Ashes and honestly if I had read Six Scorched Roses first, I think I’d have been more annoyed at certain situations and moments in Ashes instead – because it’s hard not to love Vale after reading this!
If you’re already a Broadbent fan and on your journey through the Crowns of Nyaxia books, I implore you – do not skip this book just because it’s a .5 or a short story. It’s brilliant and perfect. If it had been longer and released as a full novel I could only have loved it more. Please pick it up!
I’ve got a void to fill between now and the release of Fallen in August, and so sometime between now and then, I’ll read the other .5 connected to Crowns of Nyaxia – because honestly at this point (Ashen Son aside, which can you count it as it’s not complete?) Broadbent can do no wrong, everything she writes is brilliant (though not always perfect, I’ll admit…, but brilliant none the less).
You can bet this got added to the 6 star reads shelf on Goodreads… It deserves it.
“Because I want only you, Lilith. Whatever of you I can have. I’ll take one night. One hour. One minute. Whatever you want to give me. I’ll have it.”
