Your client is innocent. Your wife is guilty.
Who would you fight for?

When David Child, a major client of a corrupt New York law firm, is arrested for murder, the FBI ask con artist-turned-lawyer Eddie Flynn to persuade him to testify against the firm.

Eddie is not someone who is easily coerced, but when the FBI reveal that they have incriminating files on his wife, he knows he has no choice.

But Eddie is convinced the man is innocent, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. With the FBI putting pressure on him to secure the deal, Eddie must find a way to prove his client’s innocence.

But the stakes are high – his wife is in danger. And not just from the FBI . . .

Review:

The Plea is book 2 in the Eddie Flynn series, and so there may be spoilers for book 1 in the below. Any spoilers for The Plea (or Thirteen which is book 4) will be hidden.

In The Defence, book 1, Eddie is told he either has to do what his clearly guilty party need him to do, or they’ll kill him. It was tense, and I enjoyed it, but it didn’t hit the same way Thirteen did (book 4). In The Plea, book 2, Steve Cavanagh bumped it up a notch, Eddie is told get your client to plead guilty for a crime they may or may not have committed, otherwise your wife is going to jail… And I thought this was going to be a frame job situation on the part of the wife but nope… The Plea was not what I expected and I loved every moment of it.

I love Eddie Flynn. I read Thirteen (Book 4) first as it was advertised as a stand alone to me, and fell in love with his style right away. I returned to book 1 and decided I was going to read the whole series – I regret nothing about this decision. Eddie Flynn is brilliant – he loves and misses his family, he won’t send the accused to jail if they’re innocent, similarly he’ll do everything he can to send the actual guilty person to jail.

Not only did we have the reoccuring character of Eddie, obviously, but there were a handful of returning characters from The Defence and I really liked that! It’s really cool seeing Eddie build up this group of connections case to case. But that doesn’t mean you have to have read the previous books – Cavanagh is great at explaining the connection between Eddie and any given connection, no matter how many times they come up.

I think it is safe to say that I’m in my crime / thriller era… Or at least specifically my Steve Cavanagh era. His books are addictive. He sets the scene, you get a couple chapters in and then suddenly it feels like you’re watching a crime show and the idea of putting the book down is just not an option! As someone who can’t picture images in my head, I still had the same sensations watching a crime / legal show while reading The Plea! The Defence didn’t quite hit the mark in the same way, but by book 2 Steve Cavanagh had worked out the formula and it showed.

These books are the perfect pick ups between the longer fantasy books that I’m reading at the moment and I look forward to reaching the next one in the series each month (I’m having to spread them out over months else I truly think I’d devour them and then I wouldn’t have any go to ‘inbetween fantasy’ options!). Finishing The Plea left me so satisfied – I think this is why they can be read as Stand Alone books, they’re all connected yes, but you don’t actually have to read any of the previous books in order to read one. Each book is Eddie Flynn on one case and by the end of the book the case is wrapped up. It’s bloody brilliant, and I highly recommend picking up the series – but so far Book 2 and 4 have both been great.

“Truth has no place in the trial because no one is concerned with finding it.”
