Synopsis: Goodreads

As Nephele, Alexus, and their faithful companions grapple with the devastating loss on Mount Ulra, the threat of Thamaos’s reign rises in the East. To prepare, the crew must strengthen the Northland and Summerland armies, even if it means depending on the one being they never thought would live Neri, God of the White Wolf.

Nephele made a deal she can’t escape, a deal that not only ensures the Wolf’s resurrection, but one that forces her to remain at his side, even when he returns North to bolster defenses and destroy any traitors and enemies remaining on his land. The last thing Nephele wants is to spend her days and nights alone with a seductive, arrogant god, but Tiressia’s future depends on Neri being their primary weapon, one only she holds the power to wield.

As Thamaos aims his first wave of destruction at Neri, Nephele finds that not only is the Wolf more difficult to control than she believed, but that he’s far more human than she gave him credit for. With every passing hour, the undeniable passion between them burns brighter, until their fire becomes impossible to resist, and impossible for Thamaos to ignore.

Because the only thing he loathes more than the Wolf roaming Tiressia again, is that there’s a witch at his side, and her name is Bloodgood.

Review:

The Wolf and the Witch is the third book (novella length) in the Witch Walker series by Charissa Weaks, therefore there are likely to be spoilers for the previous books. Any spoilers for The Wolf and the Witch will be hidden as normal – please only read the spoilers if you’ve already read this!

I had a similar complain in books 1 and 2 of this series: the first half was slow or boring and last half was great. It’s why I was struggling to love this series in the way others have, despite loving the characters and actually being really interested in the story. However, The Wolf and the Witch felt totally different. Not to mention it had me hooked from the first chapter. I knew it had the chance to following the jaw dropping ending of City of Ruin, but Charissa Weaks fully had me invested right from the dedication.

I really like Nephele, both pre and post Neri. I liked the mystery that surrounded her when she was a mentioned character, and I loved her once she was her own character on the page. And she continued to grow for me. And when Neri got involved – all bets were off. Something that Weaks does well is write couples, I think. Because I love Alexus and Raina and I love Nephele and Neri. So none of my issues with the books were around the couples and the romance! For sure.

Not to mention one of my favourite elements were in this… little letters!! Gosh I love it when the mc’s have to resort to letters for one reason or another.

But in The Wolf and the Witch it feels as though Charissa has sorted out the pacing problem! This could of course be because it was novella length, and so a lot of the slower stuff could never had made it in else it would be a full novel… But I am hoping that actually this means that we’ve gotten all the slower stuff out of the way now?

Book 4 has been delayed in release I think based on a few of the comments on Goodreads, but let me say I am foaming at the mouth to get some answers about what is going on with Raina! So many clues and hints towards it in The Wolf and the Witch, and I just can’t hide the excitement! Do I recommend everyone push through the series to get to this novella? No, I don’t think you should have to ‘push through’ because there might be something better coming… but if you’re like me and you do that anyway then yes hold on because damn there is some good coming to those that wait (and by wait I mean push through…)

“I don’t want your fear, Nephele.” […] “I want your surrender.”

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
