Synopsis: Goodreads

When spirited necromancer, Mia Arden, is hired to cleanse a long-abandoned castle, she expects a few temperamental ghosts— not a the brooding, devastatingly handsome phantom Duke trapped inside of a cursed painting.

Lucien Wescraven has spent years as a shadow, imprisoned by the woman who loved him to madness. Now, with the castle alive with sinister magic, and the ghosts of woman who will do anything to keep him lurking in every echoing corridor, Mia is his only hope. But the deeper she digs, the more entangled she becomes in Lucien’s tragic past.

As passion flares and the castle fights to keep its secrets, Mia must Break the curse, risk her soul, and set the haunted duke free, or walk away before she’s lost to the darkness forever.

Review:

Oh this book. This caught me by surprise. Bailee spoke about adding this book to her spooky season TBR and then I couldn’t stop thinking about it. All I really paid attention to was ‘gothic, dark romance , adult casper, ghost trapped in a painting’ and I was sat. It then meant when I got to a point where I just wasn’t having a good reading time, I decided to pick this up as I was already thinking about it non stop and couldn’t read anything else anyway – what was the harm?

The harm was that I had a brilliant time! I loved Mia, our FMC and necromancer who is tasked with ridding a house that the current owner is trying to sell, of all it’s ghostly inhabitants that are haunting it’s walls. And she agrees to take on the challenge but on arrival quickly finds out that there are a many number of ghostly inhabitants and none of them are willing to talk to her… Then she discovers a painting and by chance releases the man who was trapped inside. A ghost named Lucian. And these two together were brilliant.

I didn’t expect to love this, and I did think that this was going to be pretty damn spicey for a short stand alone but I was wrong. I did love it more than expected and it wasn’t overly spicey! It was rather tame in fact. I got a gothic romance with a mystery, some yearning and banter and like I said some rather tame spice… I was spoiled!

My main gripe was something that I find shorter fantasy reads suffer with often – certain elements being poorly explained or rushed in explanation so it’s not quite enough – and unfortunately there was an element of that with Necromance. Not so much that I wasn’t able to enjoy it anyway, but it was noticiable…

All in all I loved the vibes and the romance! I was pleasently surprised by the mystery element of Necromance and enjoyed trying to work it out! The writing style was very easy to follow and a joy to read honestly! I’m very happy with a 4 star rating for this one. It really would be an excellent addition to your spooky season TBR if you have one! And if you don’t, perhaps think about picking it up anyway!

“Tell me, little necromancer, are you afraid I’ll do something ungentlemanly?”
