Synopsis: Goodreads

Every serial killer needs a friend.
Every game must have a winner.

When a chance encounter sparks an unlikely bond between rival murderers Sloane and Rowan, the two find something elusive—the friendship of a like-minded, pitch-black soul. From small town West Virginia to upscale California, from downtown Boston to rural Texas, the two hunters collide in an annual game of blood and suffering, one that pits them against the most dangerous monsters in the country. But as their friendship develops into something more, the restless ghosts left in their wake are only a few steps behind, ready to claim more than just their newfound love. Can Rowan and Sloane dig themselves out of a game of graves? Or have they finally met their match?

Review:

I chose Butcher & Blackbird for the prompt “read a book outside of your comfort zone” and this has often been described as a dark rom-com and if you know me, you know I don’t actually gravitate toward comedy pretty much ever… So I was very nervous for this one – I didn’t need to be! It was brilliant!

We have two POVs and they’re both serial killers – Sloane and Rowan. And I really enjoyed being in both of their heads as they were both so entertaining and at times intense – serial killers kind of have to be I suppose. But I really liked their characters – and I liked their ammo’s! They both absolutely had funny moments and I was absolutely giggling and smiling to myself often while reading this book! The questionable content on Sloane’s e-reader and the exchanges that happened because of this bit still have me laughing to myself now!

I’m sure some people would read this and take issue that somehow the police aren’t just really ever in their thoughts as you’d think that would be quite unrealistic – but I’d argue a competition between serial killers would be unrealistic too! It is fiction after all. And honestly, I don’t care – I questioned the lack of the police very early as they quite openly talked about their hobby and then let it go after that and just enjoyed the ride.

I’m very excited for book 2 and I would have ended up reading it immediately if it was already on my kindle but it wasn’t and unfortunatley my kindle isn’t connected to the internet when I’m at work so I didn’t have the ability to jump into book 2. My October TBR is thankful for that, I’m sure. I’m very happy that I picked this up finally! And the spice isn’t too intense (though it’s definitely explicit open door) and I know non-spice fans who have still enjoyed Butcher & Blackbird! So don’t let that put you off!

“You have never been unloveable. You were just waiting for someone who will love you for who you are, not for who they want you to be. I can do that, if you’ll let me.”
