Synopsis: Goodreads

When Jonathan Harker visits Transylvania to help Count Dracula purchase a London house, he makes horrifying discoveries in his client’s castle. Soon afterwards, disturbing incidents unfold in England: an unmanned ship is wrecked; strange puncture marks appear on a young woman’s neck; and a lunatic asylum inmate raves about the imminent arrival of his ‘Master’. In the ensuing battle of wits between the sinister Count and a determined group of adversaries, Bram Stoker created a masterpiece of the horror genre, probing into questions of identity, sanity and the dark corners of Victorian sexuality and desire.

Review:

I really wanted to cross off the ‘classics’ square on my bingo board for 2025, but I guess after having to study classics so much due to having studyed English Literature at University I was just so fed up of them! And I wasn’t often actually finding that I was enjoying them… So, it definitely took me a long time to convince myself to actually pick another one up. My friend recommended Dracula and since I wanted to read A Dowry of Blood I thought I would try to read Dracula in October!

Thankfully, Audible’s full cast version of Dracula was excellent. I absolutely loved the cast! And as long as I was listening to the book I was invested and in the moment… Whenever I switched to reading the eBook I lost interest, it felt like a chore to read and I was sadly bored. I hate that this was so difficult for me to rate because of this.

I settled on 3 stars, 2 for Dracula and 4 for the audiobook, so 3 over all… That’s where I’m at. So, what did I like? For as much as I didn’t like Lucy as a character, the whole investigation around Lucy’s illness was excellent! I loved Van Helsing working with Seward and trying to explain the situation to him after the fact so that they would be perpared to do what needed to be done. And Mina was an excellent character – when we got less of her input I did struggle even more (even with the audiobook).

I am so glad that I read Dracula finally, and I can understand why it would have been horror at the time. I can appreciate that absolutely – I mean the fact that Dracula didn’t actually have much of a presence throughout the whole book, directly, was so unnerving to me. But over all, it wasn’t totally for me.

“I want you to believe…to believe in things that you cannot.”
