You may have noticed that there was no TBR presented in July – not entirely true as I did put a post on instagram about it, but there is nothing on the blog. That’s because I picked my July TBR literally the night before I broke my ankle and it was almost entirely physical reads. I quickly realised post ankle break that I was not going to be able to read physical books in July as I was bed bound with a leg elevated so holding a physical book was not ideal… As a result, I chose to do a kindle month where I hoped to make some progress on the eARCs that I had lined up…
Here is what I read in July
July was absolutely a rough month, with the heatwaves in the UK making it impossible to sleep let alone focus on words on the page, and the general difficulties I was facing as a result of recovering from a broken ankle. But, I hoped to make some progress on eARCs – prioritising the ones that were due to come out as opposed to ones where I’d already missed the reelase date – and I do think I did okay at that! So all in all, I’m not upset.

The Crucifix Killer by Chris Carter
I picked this up a couple months ago I think because the second or third book was in the 99p sales and I grabbed the books before it! I didn’t expect to eat this up! It’s a Detective Thriller and reminds me a lot of Eddie Flynn even though he’s a lawyer. This is definitely darker and doesn’t shy away from being gruesome though – you’ve been warned!

To Dance With Death by Brittney Arena
I sobbed my eyes out when I was told that the publisher wanted to send me an eARC and physical copy of To Dance with Death (in my defence I was two days into my broken ankle situation) and so I very quickly picked it up!! I loved this and expected it to be the BotM, it was just beaten out but it was an excellent end to the duology and I’m still so honoured to have read it early.
Biggest Surprise of the Month
The Crucifix Killer by Chris Carter
I do try not to do the book of the month as the biggest surprise, but it really was this month. I’ve been introduced to Robert Hunter and I am thrilled for it. I loved To Dance With Death but my focus was still very much not in it so it took a while to read (despite loving it). The Crucifix Killer demanded all of my attention and I read it in two days. I cried happy tears. So, this was absolutely the biggest surprise.
Any 2026 Challenge progress?
26 in 2026
Sadly there is no progress to report on the 26 in 2026 challenge. I have two books on the go that are part of this challenge – Starside and Heir of Illusion – but I have had to be realistic about my situation and I put these both on pause as I wasn’t enjoying my time reading them, through no fault of the books and that’s not fair to them. I’m hoping to get to them in August!
BINGO!
I don’t have any progress to report on BINGO either – I haven’t managed to make it to Arcana Academy yet which was chosen in June because the blurb gave me 5 star feelings which would count towards a BINGO square.
So, we still don’t have a bingo. But, an update is that I’ve done a bit of research for the ‘Read a book published the year you were born’ thanks to a page on Goodreads that allows you to search by published year, and I’ve got a couple of options for this square now!!
Read 120 books in 2026
We are officially behind, and significantly behind enough that I’m no longer confident I will make it to 120 books. I’ve got a very busy autumn which might impact my reading, and whilst I’m still bed bound I’m not reading AS MUCH as I would have expected if I was unexpectedly off work for over a month… Hopefully my check up will be all good news and I’ll be able to spend more time in an upright position without my leg elevated which would mean I don’t necessarily need to be in the bedroom!
So, it’s not good news at all this time round, but I’m just glad to have read at all!
