Synopsis: Goodreads

Situated in a beautiful setting abutting the Balarang waterways and located on an acre of natural bushland, this three-bedroom country home is full of promise, character and potential. Featuring private access to the many splendours of Balarang Creek, this idyllic property is perfect for anyone seeking fresh air and serenity.

Nostalgic for childhood summers a world away from his manic Melbourne life, Dave Johnson purchases a secluded house in a postcard-perfect coastal town. A savvy investment, he convinces his wife. One year on, and his seaside dream has turned into one big headache, with his tenants not paying rent, and now simply vanishing into thin air, leaving all their belongings behind. Summoned back to the house to inspect the abandoned property, Dave and his wife Lisa become trapped in the isolated spot after their car breaks down. Spooked and alone, they become lured into investigating what really happened to their mysterious tenants.

Review:

I am going to be honest here and say the description did not have me thinking I should listen to this book. I picked it in the end purely because it’s written by the same authors as The Call which I really enjoyed. I saw Christian White & Summer De Roche and dove straight in.

This one gave me goosebumps, I had chills and the audiobook was done so well that there were moments where I questioned whether or not what I heard was in the room with me or in the book. There is a ‘is there, isn’t there, a paranormal element’ to this book, and it worked. It legitimately creeped me out. When I got into thriller books, with the exception of legal thrillers, paranormal thrillers (including the ‘is there, isn’t there’ ones) were the kind I expected to love but rarely ever found.

Still House was brilliant. It again is a short story available through your audible subscription and it’s just shy of four hours. This pair of authors really know how to write a story that is contained into a small amount of pages (or hours, I suppose!), that’s going to hook you in and keep you there so you want to listen to it in one sitting. And to be clear, I did that. This is the second time now that I’ve listened to their story in one sitting and I regret nothing.

The characters they write feel real, and despite the question of the paranormal, the situations they write about feel real too – like you could actually be unfortunate enough to find yourself experiencing exactly this too. I really enjoyed it.

This audiobook is dual narrated, which The Call wasn’t, but I loved it! Both were excellent and I think that this fact is what really lent itself well to the ‘is there, isn’t there’ aspect of the story. I think, although I am also rating this one four stars, if I was ranking them this would be above The Call. Still House was brilliant, and I am glad I stumbled upon it as it helped (shockingly) to bring my stress levels down to a managable level for while I was listening. So bloody good, now I just need to go and find out if there are any others…
