‘I’d rather be tortured by your presence than agonized by your absence.’ To err is human. To avenge is Divine.
Every person Harlow Carrenwell kisses dies, and that’s the way she likes it. The poison-lipped youngest daughter of Lunameade’s magical founding family has used her power to annihilate their enemies.
Her first husband is in the ground. Her new betrothed is next.
But Harlow has a secret. When she’s not acting as her parents’ assassin, she moonlights as a vigilante hunting abusive men in their walled city.
Meet a man. Lure him in. Kill him with a kiss. Until one night Harlow kisses a mark and he doesn’t die.
Worse, he is her new betrothed, Henry Havenwood, and now he knows about her double life. Instead of exposing her and sparking a war between their rival families, he does something far more dangerous – he whisks her away to marry him in his wild mountain fort.
Harlow doesn’t trust Henry, but the only way to protect her family and city is to uncover what his family is planning.
Cursed with a husband she can’t kill and trapped in a fort surrounded by vampire-infested woods, Harlow must do the make the man who knows she’s a killer fall in love with her anyway.
Review:
Geri has been raving about this book this year, she read it when it was indie published, so I in turn have had it on my known-about TBR for a while!! I finally got round to picking it up and I get her hype for this book! Because I had a brilliant time reading this one, not to mention it’s a stand alone romantasy and I freaking love those…
We’re following two POVs, Henry and Harlow and oh freaking boy do these two have chemistry and banter! He calls her ‘lovely’ and she calls him ‘my wolf’ and for some damn reason my heart fluttered every time. I loved them, both separately, when they hated each other, when they worked together, and ultimately when things turned spicy I still loved them. Their dynamics just worked, and the fact that this whole thing was a stand alone just makes this relationship even more impressive.
My complaint is just that it was too long, in places in the middle it felt like there were moments that could have been removed as they were too slow, but ultimately I understand the length of the book. As mentioned, this is a stand alone so introducing a plot, exploring a plot and wrapping up the plot in one book is a lot for a fantasy. However, Shelia Masterson did this really well and without the ending suffering! Normally, the ending will feel rushed in situations like this, but it wasn’t! It was executed brilliantly. Like I said, the only real pacing issue was in the middle.
I didn’t expect this story when we went in, what I was expecting I got (namely what I thought The Poisoner would be…) and then we got so much more on top of it. The twists I figured out early on therefore didn’t feel like my experience was ruined because of it, there was just more going on than I realised! I understand why Geri has been pushing this book out to the world! It is absolutely worth picking up.
