June TBR

May was such a good reading month that I almost got carried away and put extra on my June TBR. But if this year has taught me anything so far it’s that work is exhausting me and that there are things going on in life that are exhausting. So, I’m going to love the fact that May was a great month, but not put any extra pressure on June!

I’m still feeling a little iffy when it comes to Fantasy – like I’m one fantasy off a reading slump… So I had hoped to make this month a little less fantasy heavy… It didn’t work exactly as all of the fantasy books I picked were chunky but I’m excited about all of them so hopefully it’ll work in my favour! And maybe I’ll finally feel free from the reading slump that’s lingering…

So, first things first…

I’m in the middle of…

Tourist Season by Brynne Weaver – Physical read
This is the final book on my May TBR and whilst I’m a bit gutted to have not managed to finish it in time for the end of the month, I’m still pretty damn chuffed to have managed to read / get to all of the books on my TBR!

When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A. Parker – Kindle (via Kindle Unlimited)
I absolutely cannot go into The Ballad of Falling Dragons without rereading When the Moon Hatched, I simply refuse. So, I have begun that re-read. I am hoping to therefore get to the sequel in June! I originally thought about listening to this, but it’s a chunky book and generally speaking I read faster than I listen (as I don’t priortise it as much), so we’re doing an eyeball reread!

Onto the fun stuff!

Picks from the TBR Prompt Jar!

1. Read a book where the multi word title does not include the, a, of, an or and (from Andy)

I both hate and love this prompt whenever it pops up! But I didn’t struggle as much this time, because I was already thinking that I wanted to avoid having a fantasy heavy TBR as I’m still a bit weary about it! So I picked You’ve Found Oliver by Dustin Thao. I hope this one doesn’t wreck me like You’ve Reached Sam did, but that being said I’m not ojected to some emotionally hitting stuff!

2. Read a book with a great first line

For this one I picked a couple of books that I thought I was in the mood for and excited to pick up and read a the first line of each of them. I settled on Starside by Alex Aster which I’m very happy about because I have been dying to pick this one up! The first line just in case you were wondering is: This will kill me. What will kill them, I have no idea but it’s a pretty good start to a book, if you ask me. And honestly, I was looking for an excuse to include Starside in my TBR for June.

3. Read a KU (Kindle Unlimited) title

Believe me, there were a number of ways I could go here. I could read the next book in Melissa’s Legacy series, I could read the next in Matt’s Dungeon Crawler Carl series (all books for both of these series are currently on KU in the UK). But ultimately I chose Heat of the Everflame by Penn Cole because I don’t want to leave it too long and get too close to Burn’s release and have still not read Heat. Not to mention, I’m seeing very positive things about the third book in the series! So I cannot wait to read it! That being said, if I end up picking up the second books in either Legacy or Dungeon Crawler Carl, I won’t be mad about it!!

4. Read a book where the blurb gives you 5 star feelings

I opted to immediately narrow the options down here to the books on my 26 in 2026 list- whilst also knowing that this is a bingo square that I have not yet crossed off! So I read a couple of the blurbs for some of the books on my 26 in 2026 and kept coming back to two options, Arcana Academy and Heir of Illusion. Ultimately, I chose Arcana Academy by Elise Kova.

5. Read a book from your 26 in 2026

Well, this one was made easy by the previous prompt! I narrowed down my options to two, so I chose the other option for this prompt. That means I have gone with Heir of Illusion by Madeline Taylor because I also got 5 star feelings from this blurb, so why not!

6. Read a book on your TBR cart specifically

Do you remember at the start when I said I didn’t want a fantasy heavy TBR? Well, look at where we are. Fantasy heavy. To combat this I focussed on the non fantasy books that are sat on my cart. I chose Funny Story by Emily Henry off my cart to read in June. I am hoping that after the shocking enjoyment of multiple contemporary books in May, that this is the perfect time to pick up my first Emily Henry story!

Digital TBR Take Down

I have decided to do the Digital TBR Take Down a little differently this month, I curated the list a little. Normally I have no issue with the full list being on there and wherever it lands is where it lands. However, I curated a list that avoided Fantasy books (now don’t get me wrong, some fantasy reads are still there but they’re more Fantasy X like horror for example). So, let’s see what we got!

Beth is Dead by Katie Bernet

Right, I purchased this (in the 99p sales) specifically because I saw a random post on instagram talking about how it had been a really addicting thriller. I don’t remember much more about it other than that, but still I am excited!

So I checked it out just a little and found out it’s apparently a Little Women retelling? I’ve not read Little Women, but I wanted to include that info just in case you love Little Women and want to check this out!

Book Club Picks

Bailee’s Book Club – The Ballad of Falling Dragons by Sarah A. Parker So the only sad part of this is that I really want to reread When the Moon Hatched before I pick up Ballad, which hopefully I’ll get to relatively quickly but I don’t know if it’ll be in time for me to join in with this one!
Binged & Unhinged – A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab which isn’t what I voted for and if it is chosen I’m unlikely to pick this up as I have a different V.E. Schwab book on my 26 in 2026 list. That being said, I own it, so never say never!
Cody & James’ Book Club – Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke I am pretty excited for this one, I got my copy because I was excited but then I was starting to see more mixed reviews that put me off picking it up. However, this will be a good push to read it!
Probably Reading – The Ballad of Falling Dragons by Sarah A. Parker – Another one! I expected this to pop up a few times, so it’s pretty clear I’m going to be trying to get to it in June!
The Final Chapter – These books are hardly ever announced before the month, so it is possible I’ll remove this club from this post, but that doesn’t mean I’m not following this club!
What We’re Reading – It looks like The Poet Empress by Shen Tao is going to win the poll, but there is another book in very close second so it depends on whether or not that shifts by the time the poll ends! Regardless, as excited I am for both of these reads, I don’t know how likely it is I’ll get to them in June.

I know that feeling of feeling like you might have hit saturation on a genre for a bit – I think it happened to me with fantasy this past month as well. Hopefully it goes away soon!
