When the body of a young woman is discovered in a derelict cottage in Los Angeles, Robert Hunter is thrown into a nightmare case. The victim suffered a terrible death, and on the nape of her neck has been carved a strange double-cross: the signature of a psychopath known as the Crucifix Killer.
But that’s impossible. Because two years ago, the Crucifix Killer was caught and executed. Could this therefore be a copycat killer? Or could the unthinkable be true? Is the real killer still out there, ready to embark once again on a vicious and violent killing spree, selecting his victims seemingly at random, taunting Robert Hunter with his inability to catch him?
Hunter and his rookie partner, Garcia, need to solve this case and fast.
Review:
I picked The Crucifix Killer up earlier in 2026 just because one of the books later in the series was in the 99p kindle sales and I was intrigued! I’ve been trying to find a series to read that scratched the Eddie Flynn itch ever since I caught up with that series and was having to wait for each new release… Robert Hunter felt like he could fill that void!
When I began The Crucifix Killer I didn’t particularly love the writing – not the authors style, that I liked, but rather the specific words he chose to use or the ‘jokes’ his characters were making. You could say, I was rubbed the wrong way. However the plot was beyond gripping, it was pretty damn gruesome too so be warned. But I was hooked on this story, immediately.
Robert & his new rookie partner Carlos Garcia are charged with figuring out who killed a woman found in a cottage… The issue? This killer has a very specific signature, a double cross… But this killer was caught and executed two years prior. Robert was one half of the original team that was charged with finding The Crucifix Killer the first time round, and now he has a rookie partner. I know I wouldn’t want to be a rookie on the case of a notorious serial killer that apparently somehow cheated death!
I really liked the relationship Robert and Carlos began to nuture in this book, it’s the first book but Carter genuinely manipulated me into caring for these two characters as if I’d already spent 10 books with them. I’ll admit, the prologue had a lot to do with that… I was really impressed with this.
So, it is safe to say I have faith that these characters and this author may in fact fill that Eddie Flynn void. Carter writes awful serial killers, gruesome crimes, but also the relationships between his characters are excellent and gripping too.
I have been, not in a reading slump, unable to really focus on a book for very long since I broke my ankle. But The Crucifix Killer had such a hold on me, I finished it in essentially 24 hours. I couldn’t stop reading. This is another reason why I have faith in these charactesr and this author. I am very excited to go on this journey with Hunter and Garcia. But Carter, if your serial killers get worse than this then things may get rough!!
Cross your heart and hope to die… quickly
