Will romance be the plot twist?
Emmy has an enemy, and his name is Luke. The good news? She rarely sees him. The bad news? When she does, she (and her pet dragons) are reminded just how handsome he is.
Besides, Emmy is too busy focusing on her dragon-fuelled business to have time for love. But when both she and Luke approach the same local investor for funding, she’s suddenly unable to avoid him. The kookie investor insists they must compete for the cash by working at the local failing baby dragon bookshop to prove their magical business knowledge.
Determined to win the funding, Emmy dives into the task. But making a very flammable bookshop fit for baby dragons is no small feat, and it seems these rivals may need to join forces. Could Luke and Emmy’s fiery animosity spark something more between them?
Review:
The Baby Dragon Bookshop follows The Baby Dragon Bakery in A.T. Qureshi’s The Baby Dragon series. They are interconnected stand alones with each book following a different couple, that being said there may be spoilers for the books before in the series. Any spoilers for this book will be hidden as normal if they come up.
I wasn’t 100% sure who The Baby Dragon Bookshop was going to follow, but there was a single exchange in Bakery that had me thinking that at some point Emmy and Luke were probably going to be explored! And it turned out to be that Bookshop was exactly that. I definitely felt like Bookshop was a stronger book than Bakery – which is definitely positive! It had less of an issue with pacing and the trope explored was much more up my street.
We’re following Emmy and Luke who are rival coffee roasting businesses, Emmy’s uses Dragon’s to roast the beans and Luke’s uses Chimera’s. We’re shown their rivalry briefly in Bakery, but it’s obviously the main point of Bookshop and I loved that. They’re both competing for investment for their businesses and from that they’re thrown into a situation where they can’t avoid each other – we love some forced proximity.
Bookshop still had a bit of a pacing issue for me despite the strong characters albeit definitely better than Bakery! Both Emmy and Luke’s POVs were great and I enjoyed them. The biggest issue was that because of their rivalry they didn’t communicate, even when they were actually talking to each other, so things were miscommunicated and misunderstood… But when things started picking up, I was on board with their romance. I really liked it!
The baby creatures are going to keep bringing me back to this series even if I don’t love them as much as I loved the first book (which I’d argue has been the least cosy of the three). The dragons, and now Chimeras, each have their own personailities and the babies are troublemakers and I simply adore them.
It was announced that there was going to be I believe 2 more books in this series (that was originally a triology) and I ended Bookshop not really sure who would be the next one… because the only inkling I got was for who Rider of Dragons would be about! So, when the next book comes out I’ll be surprised!
“Loving you was inevitable.”
