“The training levels have concluded. Now the games may truly begin.”

The ratings and views are off the chart. The fans just can’t get enough. The dungeon gets more dangerous each day. But in a grinder designed to chew up and spit out crawlers by the millions, Carl and Princess Donut need to work harder than ever just to survive.

They call it the Over City. A sprawling, once-thriving metropolis devastated by a mysterious calamity. But these streets are far from abandoned. An undead circus trawls the ruins. Murdered prostitutes rain from the sky. An ancient spell is finally ready to reveal its dark purpose.

Carl still has no pants.

They call it Dungeon Crawler World. For Carl and Donut, it’s anything but a game.

Review:

Carl’s Doomsday Scenario is the second book in Matt Dinniman’s Dungeon Crawler Carl series! It’s a Lit RPG series that plays on the idea of being in a video game, except it’s the real world… like playing a table top RPG but it’s real world. It may be referred to as ‘Boy Slop’ but I’m loving it. There may be spoilers for Dungeon Crawler Carl in this review.

Everyone loves Princess Donut, everyone. I avoided my thoughts about Donut in my review of book one because I didn’t get the hype for her character… However in Carl’s Doomsday Scenario, I’m starting to get it more! I loved some of the more intimate moments between Carl and Donut in this book, after all they were thrown into this situation with no warning, and Donut’s ability to speak wasn’t exactly on the cards prior to this so they’re getting to know each other in a way they couldn’t before. Especially with Bea not around (though, calling it now, she’s going to show up in the later books!!!!), Donut and Carl are relying on each other, caring for each other, and making sure the other survives this damn dungeon. I love their growing friendship, and family-ship.

The story of DCC2 did not keep me as hooked throughout in the same way that Dungeon Crawler Carl did. However, what Carl’s Doomsday Scenario did do that won it brownie points, it had a phenomenal ending that absolutely had me wanting to continue reading. I put off picking up the second book for a while because the ending of DCC1 was kind of just a ‘yeah…?’ moment, like of course that would happen next… But so much happened in the last segments of DCC2 that I could have gone straight into the third book if I had the audiobook ready to go.

That’s another thing that changed this time, I did an immersive read. I get it! I get why everyone says Jeff Hayes is worth listening to. The amount of voices this man does!! Though, I do think his Donut voice is the best and his Carl voice heavily reminds me of Kronk so I get to have a giggle every now and then. Not to mention Goddammit Donut is just ten times funnier when said outloud.

I’m excited for more of certain characters from the first book as a result of the race and class choosing that happened at the start of this book! As well as the potential for some new regulars! Not that there is anything wrong with Donut and Carl, but I like their interactions with other people too! Plus, more voices for Jeff Hayes to figure out… And to be clear, this would have been a 3.25-3.5 without Jeff Hayes. He bumped it up to a 4 star and absolutely added to this experience which I am grateful for.

So, all that is to say, the story for the most part was less gripping but the performance and certain situations and quests in this book did have me hooked in. The narration performance was excellent, and I can’t wait to read the third book!

“So help me god,” I said. “I will abandon you right here and right now if you choose to take up the kazoo.”
